If it's intended to deceive the search engines or users but follows Google's Webmaster Guidelines and doesn't violate TOS, then it's possibly Greyhat SEO. If it does violate terms and is intended to deceive then it's blackhat.

I wish you had elaborated on the grey hat because I am really interested in SEO methods that can deceive the search engines. Don’t get me wrong that I will do that kind of SEO method but it’s actually knowing it so I can avoid doing it. Besides I also need to know that deceiving methods so that I can give a good answer when someone would ask me about that grey hat method.

Deceive search engines but allowed by Google? How did that happen?

That's also what I got when I did my search, but I still can't understand how is that possible? I mean, it's allowed but it's bad?

It includes practices like Cloaking,Doorway pages, gateway pages etc.
But aren't these blackhat?

Paid linking/buying links could be seen as a form of grey hat. Google frowns on some types of paid links which are used to boost PR/search engine ranking and explicitly demands those links be no-follow. But they also reward some backlinks from high page rank directories that require a submission fee. Seems as if Google is the final decider of what is white/black hat and if it wants, it lets some things slip in between to shades of grey.

Well, I wonder how can they tell if a link is bought or added organically. I mean, I can add links on my blogs to my friends' sites, and with/out reciprocal links. It's similar to how people bought links to other sites...

I'm not sure how Google knows or could know. Sometimes, i wonder if Google isn't just bluffing and trying to scare us all with their dire warnings about backlinking practices. If there is no way for them to know the difference anyway.

Was it possible that Google is bluffing? I mean, have they done this before?

When Store Coach mentions gray hat SEO here on the Store Coach website he is referring to SEO methods that are in the "gray area" between black hat & white hat.

I have been looking for the same question since months that what is gray Hat but did not find any specific answer. Some say it is in between white hat and black hat etc, I would rather like to know further elaboration this regard.

As google is continuously updating its panda and penguin and SEO rules are getting harder day by day than how it is possible to to beat search engine algorithms with black hat techniques.

Does it make any sense? Guide me in this regard.

A mix of white hat and black hat. Not as bad as blackhat but still not as good as whitehat.

At the end of the day, Google doesn't like seo as they want their search engine to show genuine popularity of a website.
Even if we open accounts by hand, or click a button for a bot to do this for us, white, black and grey (British spelling- lol) is subjective to who ever is answering the question.

Is blackhat really that "bad"?

Depends on if you know how to use it or not.

Well it would/could be ok for your site if you do not get caught. Can you not get caught using it is the question.

Grey hat seo means to use both white hat as well black hat techniques for building links. It is basically a mixture of white and black hat seo.

A mix is true. Not as ethical as whitehat but not as unethical as black hat either.

Do you mean bad as in ethically or morally wrong? What do morals have to do with business? Google is the one that decides what is right and wrong for SEO and enforces it. Play along or you will be out of their search engine.

Greyhat seo is a combination of white hat and black hat seo. Blackhat - totally against google, greyhat - partially against google, whitehat - with google

MikeQ
Yes, it is combination of both white hat and black hat.

It would be better if you use only white hat SEO for better result.

You can use any tool to collect data but do link building manually.

I admit that I am ignorant of the blackhat and greyhat SEO because I get confused that’s why I am only focusing on the basic SEO. But I know that I have to learn in order to avoid violations of Google policy. I now understand that getting a service to spread the backlinks is a form of greyhat and although it is safe than the blackhat procedure, I still should not be involved in buying links. It’s always better to do it myself.
