Possibly, one way to know if a link is popular, is how many times it's clicked on. So the amount of traffic that a link brings to your site could be one indicator.

How can you identify the traffic that comes to your website, is there an indicator that it came from a particular backlink? If that is possible then I guess it is a good thing to monitor the incoming traffic so you will know which backlinks are getting more hits. That analysis can help you in your next posting of backlinks on the kind of website or the kind of post.
