I like web 2.0 sites like Tumblr and blogger for backlinks, not social networking sites (which are good for traffic but not links). Forums are OK for backlinks so long as they are related to what your site is about.

Of course, a mix would definitely much better than just using one. Besides, having a variety of links will get you more visitors on your pages.

I like forum backlinking as I'm usually on forums anyway. Though not all forums allow signature lines. Sometimes, it's harder for me to find blogs where I want to post a comment.

I do use forum signature links, apart from forum links, I do blog commenting too, only those blogs which are related blogs.

Personally I prefer backlink from blog comments. It is because most bloggers moderate there blogs, and if get through it then it means you are good and getting backlink from a quality blog.

My take on backlink building is the social media and blogs. Not much for the forum because I don’t go to very popular forums. For blogs, it is easy to find a very popular blog with thousands of daily readers. Just one comment on a blog with that size of readers gives you a good chance of getting traffic from a single comment provided your comment is sensible, relevant and interesting to the general readers. Social media is also a fertile place but you cannot post often because that is considered spamming.
