What is it like to fight spam?

Ever wonder what it is like to fight spam if you do not have your own website. Today Matt Cutts gave the world a glimpse into what it is like to fight spam for Google. Matt has a video that explains his job and what he does day in and day out to fight spam. If you are interested in this, you should have a peak:

Google not only uses humans who manually fight spam, but also a group of engineers that write algorithms for spam fighting. Those that are the best, according to Matt, will look for patterns and trends for a loophole to be exploited. Once the human spam fighter has done this, it will be passed along to the engineers who will cover the said loophole with an algorithm. This process will be tested and tested again until the right one is given.

Engineers are also working on making old algorithms faster or better for new issues that might be at hand. Matt also said that one should want to cover the holes of a spammer. He stated you never want to play whack a mole with them to knock them out. Instead cover the hole to fix the problem.

There is no way I would really want to have this job. Although it most likely pays well for the engineers.

They want to have algorithm on human level, but it will never work unless they hire millions of people that will manually position all the websites in SERPs. Once they close the doors to a certain technique, another one comes alive. And once they close the door to 100 techniques, those of ancient methods from the past get opened up again. EMD shouldn't work, keyword stuffing shouldn't work, many of those shouldn't work and didn't, but they are working again.

All that anchor density and so on... I know a guy that has 5k people on his blog per day and he didn't create any backlinks to it at all, it is all 100% natural, but still his incoming anchors are mostly his main keyword at 70%. If you asked Matt Cutts about it, he'd say it's unnatural, but the owner of that blog didn't build any links to it, so it's a joke.

That is great that your friend figured all that out. Good for him and his site!

It looks like life in the internet is getting more and more complicated. We all have our share of spam and mine is the occasional email and text that I receive. Lately I have been receiving an email from a big bank. It is an ad of their services. The email looks authentic with even the phone number and email addresses are real. But there is a button for you to click that will bring you to another website. I have reported it to the bank and I don’t know what they have done about that spammer using their name.
