Almost everyone knows about using signature lines for SEO and backlinking.
However, you can use forum signatures as a form of advertising to attract real visitors to your site.
Even if you are just using your signature line as a form of advertising (such as where people see your link and click on it), it's still important that the forum be similar in niche to your site, otherwise click through may be low.
So for instance, if your site is about sports cars and you post a backlink in a cooking/recipes forum, you're not likely to get many click throughs as the people on that forum are looking for info on cooking.
Please share any other techniques you have for using forums for advertising (not just SEO/backlinking).
I agree that forums can be an excellent place to advertise a site. You can get some decent traffic to your site if you know how to do it right.

When I started my blog, I used only forum profile/signature links to build backlinks. They helped me grow from nothing to top 10 in some of my keywords. It implies, they are not only useful, but necessary to succeed.

signature posts are probably not usefull for higher serp positions, signature links is an google forbidden activity, they treat it as influencing of serp position. read google for more.

Yes if you spam then you are doing yourself a disservice and you will not get anywhere. Best to never use any form of spam on a site.

I personally use my own forum and forums that I work on to promote my links. I feel that using a forum to promote is a very effective as well as beneficial way to promote.

Depends on what site I am promoting on. 1 of them gets me a good amount of clicks as for the other, not so much.

Advertising on a promotion forum is a good way to get new people coming to your forum. It helps when the promotion forum is very active, then you won't have to post as many ads there.

Spam will only discredit your account. When you spam on a forum you are not only likely to get banned but it will also reflect badly on the site you are trying to link to. Others will quickly pick up on the fact you are a link dropper and spammer and will point you out in other threads as someone to avoid.

So true. Or you can also be put on a list, not sure what it is called, but it starts with an A, and then you will not be able to post on some sites.

Forums are great ways to get real visitors and back links. I hired a guy to post on popular forums for me with my niche related link in the signature.
