    If you are buying Facebook ads to drive traffic to a squeeze page to get sign ups, then in that way you are still paying for ads. So far, I have not done this and only rely on visitors to my site for subscriptions.

    I don't purchase email leads, as I use just my subscribers. I may use email leads for the future though with other projects, like affiliate products. Are you paying for email leads?

    Purchased email leads or subscribers are a waste of money. And the only person benefiting from this list is the one who sold the list to you. You will do better with your own subscribers who know and trust you and want to believe what you are saying . The people on your purchased list have no clue who you are or why you would be spamming them.

    If you can get a list of guaranteed opt ins, people who purchased similar items before, then they might be willing to listen to you now. This would only work if the person were signing up with the knowledge that third party companies would be sending them emails. This is a common practice with many large corporations that ask your permission to let 'partner's send you emails.

    You are paying for leads even if they are your own as you cover the cost of your hosting and autoresponder. These costs are just part of doing business though and might be considered mandatory if you want to build a really responsive email list.
