    Are there any situations as a freelancer where you would work for free or at a discount?

    Some clients see the word freelancer and automatically assume you will work for free. And, this is especially true of new freelancers who don't have a body of work or portfolio samples.

    Freelancers are their own boss and that means watching the bottom line. If you want to work for free, then get an internship. If you want to earn money as a professional then act like one and charge money for your services. It's just that simple.

    If the buyer was a good customer of mine, I might consider giving him a freebie here and there.


    Are you earning enough from your service price to be able to justify giving away free work? I'm sure it's taking time to give that work away and that could interfere if you are required to do paid work.

    A crafty buyer will try to reason that you should do the work for free or really cheap as you will have them as a reference later for better paying work.


    That doesn't mean you should be giving away free work for any reason. There are much better ways to build a portfolio than freebies.

    I'm a Level 1 seller here, and I had put in an $8 bid for a full 750 word article (the max was set at $5)...
    He came back to me and STILL asked me to do it for $5 AND he wanted me to write 2 FULL pages worth of research...

    I politely declined, as I'm not the type of person to write and write and write and write for only a couple of bucks. I'm fair now mind you, but I have to live too...lol

    DON'T sell yourself short.

    It's good that you know your worth. You are the only person who can give yourself a raise when you are a freelancer. Don't let others devalue your talent or what you are capable of doing.

    An offline employer could be fined for making a worker do anything for free, but online people just assume you will work for free, even if what you are offering is worth thousands of dollars.

    I don't work for free even if it is a sample work that will entitle me to good paying work. I can do a sample for a discount, but I will never offer to work for free even if I am asked to submit a sample of my work. I am a freelancer and a professional, I will never give away my hard work for free.

    There is one forum owner who I noticed has a good heart. He has a lot forums and sometimes he pays people to provide contents to his forums. I had asked a favor from him once and he hastily obliged. With that, I was willing to provide free contents to his forum when he said that he needed help. However, his good heart prevailed and he wanted to pay me for my efforts. In other words, I was not able to provide free service to him because he refused.
