The 404 page is the perfect place to put links to other parts of your forum or blog or even post a one time offer/sign up box or special offer the person might not see otherwise. Whatever you do, be sure they have reason to click through to another part of your site, rather than seeing the broken link as a total loss.

Include a list of links to places they should be visiting on your site, not just the home page as this will ensure the person stays around longer.

I usually use the 404 to guide the user out of the ciaos. Give them a search bar & some links.

I include "Page not found" on 404 page. I also mention my website link with massage "visit my website" .

My 404 page tends to just be my default page but I hope to customize it eventually.

You 404 page is the best if it comes with highlighted HomePage link, and also site map at footer.

I despise 404 error pages, so I usually redirect back to the index, or even sometimes add a screamer - especially if a user is trying to view my config files.. lol

At some point, I saw a site that had a sales blurb on their 404 page. It was an attempt at making a sale. I don't know if it worked but the idea stuck in my head.

In the rush to get a new site online, or to keep your current site up to date, it’s easy to forget little details, such as the 404 Page — the page is what your visitors see when they follow a broken link, type in a bad URL, or otherwise try to open a page that is not on your site.

I am always redirecting 404 page to home page ... to save link juice and avoid
google crawler 404 which is usually giving a bad impression ...

Some sites will automatically redirect you to home page if you click on a link to a now non-existent page. This could be a frustrating experience for the site user who would really like to see the content on the link. However, if that page is not available, you should provide alternate links on the 404 or page not found page that is similar.
