    Should you allow advertising on a forum?

    Some forums allow advertising on posts or in a specific subforum. Is this a good idea for every type of forum?

    On what type of forum does this concept work best?

    That would not work on some niche forums such as gaming. Though it would work on an internet marketing forum. You could restrict advertising to just that one forum though.

    I think forum owners should allow users to advertise. There should be a section where the users can list their products and services. The forums must also allow signature space. Here are my reasons:
    You can attract more members if you allow them to advertise.
    You can make members active if you allow advertising
    If you don't give any incentives, you will not only lose member base but also the discussion.

    I guess it would depend on the niche and also on the kind of advertisement. But generally, my take on having a board for advertisements is a nice come on and would boost traffic to your forum no matter how meager. The advertisement can be likened to spam but still, it is content and considered legitimate post. The poster will also be encouraged to post in other boards and probably would monitor their post for replies.
