Would you ever own competing forums?

Just recently, a friend of mine offered to give me his gaming forum. There are 100 plus active members on the forum and many posts. Apparently, he is going in a different direction with his life and doesn't have time for the forum anymore.

Currently, I'm the owner of a game forum and not sure if I should just take the forum and merge it into mine or keep both apart. The forum communities are nothing alike. So I'm just worried they won't get along.

I can really see the benefit of having just one big niche forum, rather than two to manage. You would have to put less time into marketing your forums separately. Also, you would have a larger community.

Akemi has point. However, you should take your members' interests into consideration. There is a chance that you'll get benefit from merging two forums, but there's also a possibility to lose a fair amount of members. Have you thought of creating a poll on both forums and actually asking your members how would they feel with that? Get more opinions, it'll be easier to decide. Would you ever own competing forums?

Only you would be able to tell if it were a good idea or not. It would be hard to manage two forums. Are you thinking of merging them together?

That looks like a conflict of interest on your part to have your own game forum and manage another in the same genre. Even in the real world, managing 2 competing firms will just divide your attention and the worst that could happen is that both firms would go bankrupt. And there is a probability that there can be gamers who are members of both forums. Perhaps the best approach is to merge the 2 forums and be partners with your friend.
