Not sure which posts to delete

I have been asked to be the moderator on my friends forum. And, so far, it's a really fun job. However, there are times when I am not sure what qualifies as a spam post. So far, I have deleted some promotional link posts. What type of spam posts should I be looking for?

Not all short posts are spam related as sometimes a member simply can't think of more to say on a subject. Also, there are times when a very few words will express the same thing as a paragraph. Some people just cut to the point, rather than padding their writing with excess words. In those situations, it would be unfair to delete a short post, especially if the content of that post is as informative as a much longer post.

Look for posts that are out of place, that don't make sense or that you can tell the person only commented to get a link.

I know several moderators who puts a red flag on negative posts. For example the topic is about movies. A comment that says watching movies is a waste of time is a candidate or a red flag. And then the moderator will confer with another moderator foa an opinion before making a decision. Spams that promote something which is out of topic are definitely deleted. By the way, one forum I know has an invisible board where mods move the deleted posts. That serves as the record so a deleted post can be reinstated if needed.
