How do you deal with drama on your forum?

Do you tolerate drama or hysterics on your forum? What would you do if a good forum member started acting up and showing attitude toward other members and staff?

I don't deal with drama. It's too time consuming and zaps my creative energy. If I see that someone is being dramatic, I will just tune out or walk away until they've had time to cool off.

Greetings to all!!

I'm a moderator on one forum, and owner of another.
Drama is somewhat tolerable depending on the discussion. If the members are keeping the debate on topic and remains clean for the most part, then I don't really have an issue. It's when it starts becoming more of a personal attack on someone, or the swearing becomes a second language, that's when I come in.

I deal with it through PM mostly, but I will call out someone if they are having difficulty grasping the message.
I give them three warnings, and if they are ignored that's when I suspend them. If there is a long time member or a "veteran", I would try to get to the bottom of it, particularly if it's someone who normally doesn't present his/her self in that manner.

I haven't had to ban someone completely yet, however I have had to speak to several in regards to behavior and etiquette, and temporarily suspend accounts. I had even gave them pointers on how to properly debate with someone (it seemed to have helped).

If people get it, they get it...
If they don't, then they don't...

It helps to have an encouraging talk with the person in private. Sometimes, there are real life struggles and stresses that can cause someone to act up and be temperamental in public. And, giving a sympathetic ear might be just what it takes to solve the problem.

No good moderator or admin would allow a forum member to publicly troll others. However there is a big difference between debating an issue and trolling and as a moderator or staff member you should be clear about what constitutes destructive behavior and what is simply a conversation that is becoming heated.

I understand that the forum is a social place in the internet. We have to remember that real people inhabit the forum although some are in disguise. But nevertheless, we can see the idiosyncrasy, habits, personalities and traits on their posts. And sometimes it cannot be helped when a member would be harsh with a comment directed to the forum, to the staff or to a particular member. In such cases, my suggestion is to immediately contact the offending member in a diplomatic way, of course. For all we know, he might be having some personal problems and he was just letting out the steam. But if the drama is for real and he would insist then suspension is in order.
