    How many years of experience should your mods have?

    How many years of experience do you require from a mod before you will hire them for your forum? Or, would you simply hire someone with no experience?

    I don't mind hiring a new moderator with no experience if their only job is to manage one simple subforum or talk with forum members. It's a good way to try out talent before committing them to a bigger moderator job.

    I won't hire someone who has zero forum moderator experience as they are usually too over zealous with deleting posts and warning members. I want someone who is smart enough to know what an actionable offense is. In other words, I don't want someone learning on the job at my forum.

    Even if they have no formal training as a moderator, it won't be very hard to get a forum member accustomed to the job. So long as they are familiar with how to delete spam, they will do fine even with no previous experience.

    I don't think years is more important than the skills and knowledge. As long as the moderator has skills with managing a website, be it a blog or forum, and is knowledgeable on the topic, it will be fine. Let say your forum is a discussion board on webhosting. Would you consider someone with 7 years experience in managing the forum or someone who has knowledge in web hosting. I think the later will be more beneficial to the forum.

    I have no experience as a moderator but I am confident to say that I can do the job and maybe even more efficient that other mods. If you are a forum denizen for a year then you will get to know the ins and outs of the operation. All you will need to be a moderator is the list of instructions aside from vesting on you the authority to moderate the boards. There is no special school to learn the job of moderators, it’s just from the experience of going to forums.
