Do you like forums that have catch all categories?

For instance, there would be one main category, let's say 'general chat' and that's it, no other sub-sub forums or subcategories. And, literally ALL discussions would go into that and you'd have to sort through page after page of generic topics to find anything relevant.

Who wants to visit that type of forum? It would be chaos with unrelated discussions all clumped together. I'd prefer some type of organization to the threads. Maybe even just five or six subforums.

That sounds like a big mess. It would be such a turn off to potential forum members. Maybe there is some real reason behind the clumping of all threads into a catch all category, such as just creating content which will later be migrated to subforums. However, it might impede new members signing up.

I like visiting sites that are well organized. That does not sound like it is.

For me, a convenient forum is one that has a defined set of boards. I know it's not easy to decide on the categories but you cannot have just one board to be a catch basin of topics. It's better to be well organized not only for the benefit of the community but also for you as the admin/owner. When you need to find a topic, it would be a breeze is the topics are segregated by the boards where they belong. Currently, I am a member of one forum with exactly that example of one board for a catch basin of all topics. It's a turn off.

Nope definitely not interested. All the forums would be like a trash, everything jumbled up into a parking lot. Very inconvenient to sort out which topic to comment and messy too. It is not a user friendly forum and without a sub categories, it is difficult for the members to choose the prefer category to post comments or create new threads.
