Why don't forum members start discussions

On a forum where I am moderator, many of the members are very passive and wait for discussions to be started. They don't even bother to start discussions. And, it could be a week or month before anyone but the owner or admin starts a discussion. Why is this?

Sometimes, forum members get into a habit of being spoon fed discussions and content, so they don't really need to post discussions. That is one possibility, they are passive because they are waiting. And, it won't change.

What you need to do is encourage forum members to post their questions about your niche. You might even create a specific section for just questions or personal experiences.

How active is your forum? Getting members that post replies regularly is easier than getting than getting those that post topics often. Member will create topics if they think there is a good chance of it being replied to, if they think it will just sit there for a while, until they have most likely gotten there answer elsewhere or just aren't interested anymore. Just keep creating them yourself, get your staff to help out creating them, the more active you get, the more other normal members will start discussions rather than just replies to them. Why don

Most likely, your members post new discussions as needed, rather than what would help you best. For instance, if a member has an issue or question, they would likely post it. Then they can get an answer. If they don't have questions, they're not likely to just post discussions.

Sometimes it is just easier for a member to go to a thread and post their opinions under a thread that is already made.

Some members do not feel comfortable starting new threads right away and would rather see what the forum is all about in the beginning. Encourage others to start new conversations, or send a message to them to do so.

Sometimes I have found that it is easier to reply to threads when I first join a site. Then after a while I will start making new threads.

I have to admit that I have difficulty in starting a discussion. First, is the potential mistake that I can commit. Sometimes I am posting a comment that when I review, I realize that it could have been better. With a new thread, I am not confident although I know that I have to create new threads in order to be fair. Maybe it is a common attitude because it is much easier to read a post and make a reply.
