Being friendly with forum members

On some forums that I visit, everyone is on a first name basis and the atmosphere is very friendly and relaxed. On others, there is more of a stand off type attitude and it seems there is no real connection between the forum members; no friendly banter. As forum owners/admins what can we do to create a more friendly 'first name' basis atmosphere for our forums? What are some of the things you can do to help forum members relax and feel comfortable?

I like the ask me threads on here. It is a way that everyone gets to know each other.

I like the friendly sites. Seems more relaxed. I think that adding a lounge section is a good idea to keep things relaxed

Friendly sites are just better to be on. They are more relaxed and I feel that they accomplish more on them.

I feel that when there are games on the site it lightens things up. This will make the site feel a bit more friendly.

Everyone wants to be part of a forum where people are comfortable with each other. On other forums where they barely communicate, you will notice there are fewer discussions and more spam from strangers rather than active open discussions from forum members.

When it comes to my own forums, I try to be very likable and easy to approach to all my members so they know that somebody is always there to help them if they need it. So I enjoy and try my hardest to be friendly with all of them.

Also having the admin on to answer and post is a great idea as well. States that the forum owner really cares.

An admin of one forum sent me a welcome message after my first post. After sometime, the admin again sent me a message of appreciation for my posts of new topics. I felt like I belong although I am a newbie in that forum. An admin who cares to make an effort like that can really make the member feel comfortable.
