Dealing with threats from staff or forum members?

How do you deal with a situation where a forum argument escalates to the point of threats and potential violence? Do you outright ban? Also, what if the forum member or staffer who made the threat has access to you through other methods, not just on the forum but such as in real life or via a messenger. Do you unfriend that person? Talk about this scenario and what you might do to mitigate damage caused by this situation on your forum.

I guess that I would ban and if it got bad that they contacted me other ways unfriend them on whatever site they are hassling me on.

Unfriending such individual is also another way to go with handling such situations. Sometimes, it baffles me how certain people behaves online, it's really disgusting.

If they are making my forum suffer I would ban them. And then make sure that they did not in any way have access to any of my social accounts, unfriend them if I have to.

Ban right away. I would not put up with it at all. Ban them from everything that I was attached to.

If they are going to threaten me I do not need them in my life at all. Get rid of them.

Talk to them and if they do not shape up, then ban them.

Some people get very aggressive online, feeling protected by anonymity. It can get scary.

Seriously @Beverly, I have actually had one experience with one member online and if you see the pace at which the person attacked me, all I had to do was run back into my protective shell in order to avoid matters from escalating.

I think that if you are lenient enough, you would inbox such individual to stop the farce but if it continues then ban is the best next thing to do.

Perhaps there’s not much problem when the threat comes from a member. All you need to do is to either suspend his rights or ban him outright. And if you ban him, it is best if you inform the community so the others will not follow his footsteps. But if a staff does the threats, that’s clearly out of line particularly if you will be stalked using other means. I guess that is a war and by all means, you have a valid reason to erase him from your life.

If I feel threatened or in danger, I'm telling the police. Maybe they can give me some advice. Also, if the person has access to me through other avenues, I'd do my best to close all the open doors I can find that connect us. I would begin keeping records and documenting “proof” of the potential violence. I would confide in someone that I can trust and let them know what's going on. My survival instinct has kicked in. I'm in Depend and Defend mode. Depending on what's happening I am going to defend myself!
