I like the idea of selling banners on your sites. As long as the site does not look cluttered, this is a great way to earn a bit extra.

I had participated a forum site and I noticed that it sells banners, signature links, faucet, bitcoins and promote other forums or earning online sites which I believe that the forum owners do earn referral points or money from there. Very clever ideas!

Adsense is not enough to earn from your forum. Since forum contains threads with a short post, there will be no relevant keywords. Since there are no relevant keywords, there will be no related ads. If the ads are not related to the contents, chances of ad clicks are very low.
Apart from having Adsense, you can also do affiliate marketing on your forum. When you create a discussion on the forum, place a relevant affiliate product. This will encourage people to buy that product.
Selling ad space is another way to earn from a forum.
Alowing members to advertise their products and services for a certain fee will also generate income for your forum.

On the contrary, if the forum is very dynamic, I guess it will earn a good profit. I know of a local forum that is owned by a corporation of members. They receive good dividends every end of the year from the revenue of their forum. Even if the posts are short but there are plenty then it counts. The culture in that forum is for users to respond continually to a post that has a semblance of a chat box. Sometimes 4 or more users will be replying from time to time in one thread. And that forum has an average of 50 active users any time of the day.

Whether you are earning from a forum or no depends on your monetization method. If you are solely depended on CPA ads, having visitors and active participation might not earn you enough. Your ads need to be clicked to make you money. However, if you have CPM ads, traffic is the key to earn. You will be earning from every visit.
