Whenever someone asks me what I do I always give a short and sweet answer because trying to explain exactly what I do just confuses people and they tend to not talk to me after that lol.

My answer is usually something along the lines of "I work online helping people with their websites. Mainly the designs and marketing of the clients website".

Normally their response is "So you're a hacker?"

I'm not a hacker, I can barely code my own websites :'(

Hey sanfora,
First of all, you should never be embarrassed. You are working online as a freelancer. That's totally okay, no matter what others might say or think. As long as you're satisfied with what you do, they should be the same, if they care about you.

However, I do understand what your point is and my suggestion would be something like this:
  • I'm an entrepreneur with a very particular set of skills which allows me to work world-wide.

Another option might be something like this:
  • I'm a self employed entrepreneur with world-wide clientele.

By using any of these phrases you shouldn't feel embarrassed. It's actually true and it's something that sounds very powerful in the ears of others. Best of luck!

Kind Regards,
hitmeasap

Embarrassed?? Well actually i am very proud to work as freelancer, specially because many people think it's impossible to make leaving out of it, because they don't take it seriously. Working online have many advantages and i personally see it as a future where more and more people will be involved, so that's another reason to be proud because you already have some experience while they have being denying possibilities to make nice amount of money online.

Even many freelancers doesn't take freelancing seriously, but once you start doing it as if you having your own and only business, you will be glad and proud that you are involved in online business!

Hi sanfora it is really true scenario as a freelancer. I am getting such difficulties also. It is depend on your circumstance where you live. I think well educated people already know about this matter. For example when I start this profession before 7 years and I never able to persuade about this profession to my friends and family. But now that scenario has changed and most of the people here aware now about this job. Yes still People will ask you what you are doing and what is your job? I simply answer something like this I am outsource contractor and working online with foreign clients. And feel proud too as freelancer or outsource contractor.

Thanks by Ajlancer

This is a very practical question. Most people have no idea what freelancing is about. They do not understand the concept and the main result is that they downgrade what you do. It is a pity of course, and it makes us freelancers feel uneasy because most people relate a person's success with his or her job or career. I generally avoid going into details and simply say I work online offering content writing services to people who need content for their websites etc.
I suggest you avoid trying to explain things to people and simply focus on how fulfilled you feel with your job as ultimately it affects your life not theirs ;)

Why would you be embarrassed? I usually just say I am an online marketer. If they ask for more details I explain about my 3 websites all in a different passion of mine. I have often found business coming my way from offline interactions so I think it is great to say what you do.

Embarrassed? Why are you embarrassed? I have been working online fulltime since 2012, I don't earn as good as my peers working offline, however, I am never embarassed to say I work online. When someone asks me about my job, I say I am a web content developer. I don't say I am an online writer because people in my place do not have regards for writer and they don't believe writing is a real job. Web Content Developer sounds high to them.

Some of my writer friends whose livelihood is freelancing don't hide the fact although what tbey say about their occupation is not freelancing but working inthe internet. Over here, freelancing has many meanings so it is clearer if they hear that you have an internet job. I have an office job so I never mention to people about my freelancing.

I have been asked this so many times by friends and classmates and I always tell them about it although I try not to waste time going into personal details. I hate when they ask about earnings because there is no consistency. Sometimes I make more and sometimes I make less. Even if I encourage them to join, I can't make them enjoy doing it like me because I love writing while some of my classmates like other things.

This sound both weird and funny to me, why would one be embarrassed about working online.I don't get it.I tell people straight up that I work online as a freelancer. For the mere fact, I get paid for the work is enough reason for me to tell anyone that needs to hear that I work and get paid at the end. If you get embarrassed been a freelancer how would you feel if you go into crime to survive. Please don't allow any one downplay you. You're doing just fine.
