Be The Leader Yourself or Hire A Team Leader. - What would be the best thing to do?

To be or not to be. That's the question.

Hey guys,
During most of my freelance career, my main business have been brand building, and even though I worked hundreds of hours myself I also managed to establish a great team of a handful of members.

Me and my Team could produce way more and help more clients compared to what I could to on my own, and that's the only reason I established a Team.

That being said, I was the Team Leader.. But that also put a lot of pressure on me.

A team leader is someone who provides guidance, instruction, direction and leadership to a group of other individuals (the team) for the purpose of achieving a key result or group of aligned results. The team leader reports to a project manager (overseeing several teams). [Source.]

So, what I thought I'd talk about today, is about being a team leader and leadership.

Do you think it's possible to hire a team leader, who basically do exactly what you'd do yourself, and a person who'll do exactly what you tell them to do..

And do you think that will help you to have more free time yourself?

Also, if you would consider to hire a team leader, how would you do it? - What qualifications would you look for? - And where would you look for a team leader?

Best Regards,

The idea of having a team leader really does sound enticing to me. I find managing people quite stressful and I am sure I would get very frustrated. Having someone deal with all of that for me while I only have to deal with one person sounds awesome.

Yes I would think it would leave a lot more time available, but also I think it would mean I would be able to think and see more clearly than if I were stuck with my head in the thick of things.

However finding the right team leader could be a challenge. In order for this to work you would need to find a someone that is really good with people, can manage multiple projects and uses their own initiative too.

You nailed it Lynne. "finding the right team leader could be a challenge".

And yeah, I bet it would be very difficult to find the right one too. In fact, "the right" is probably almost impossible.

I have hired team leaders to help me in the past and it has worked well but it also costs a lot of money so normally, I prefer being the team leader and save the extra money to hire a talented leader.

I can totally see your thoughts here MasterA. Being the team leader yourself is probably the best option in most scenarios, but I also think that a team leader would be able to assist you in many ways, as long as you're using the team leader properly.

I would like to be the leader of the team instead of hiring someone to supervise affairs on my behalf. The reason is that I always want to have the first-hand experience of things that hand around the place I control.

I think it depends on the context. Becoming the leader on your own can be a good idea when you are the sole business owner. And it can be also good for establishing yourself. I have seen some of the people doing the project management course. And they seem to be getting into the demand. And it works out just fine for many people. I have learned that team leadership is not going to be easy. people have different way to behave. And it can be troublesome in that context. So make sure to properly understand this part.

I prefer to be a leader myself than hire supporters, that way I will make things go the way I want them to be.An adage says one can't spread nails on the bed and expect to sleep soundly. So it better to lead and let others follow or else the leaders would or might be running with his or her own vision not just.

This topic is not new to me because I used to be project manager in our office with 95 people under me. It’s not easy to be a team leader because all the responsibility will be on your shoulder. But for a business, it may be convenient to hire a team leader so that you can be relieved of the dirty work, so to speak, but take note that the full responsibility still lies on your shoulder simply because you are the owner of the business.
