5 things great website owners do in difficult times

We all hit tough times as some point in our careers, but what we do in these tough times is what pushes us towards success, or simply kills our company.  You might get depressed and when you're down on your luck, but that's by not means a time to start slowing down your productivity.  If times are difficult, you actually need to increase your work hours and do whatever you can to boost your traffic and sales so you don't have to close your doors.  Many websites get shut down because the owner simply hit some tough times and couldn't overcome it, but you don't have to be in the same boat as long as you push forward.

Great website owners know that difficult times could be right around the corner, so they have contingency plans in place for when these times do happen, and they will usually happen once or twice in your career.  In this discussion I'll be going over 5 things great website owners do in difficult times, and they are:

Freelance to make some quick money
If you have a website, you likely have some skills that can be sold on freelancer platforms like SEOclerks.  Do you know how to set up a website, set up email servers, design images, write content, etc.?  Well, you have some skills that other people do not, and they will pay you for your experience and help with their own problems 5 things great website owners do in difficult times

Freelancing shouldn't be seen as a way to make a little bit of money, because there are plenty of people out there making full time incomes just from doing one task online that they're specialized in.  I know a programmer who makes $5,000+ a month down in the Philippines, and he is a full time freelancer.  If you know anything about the Philippines, you know that $5,000 a month is an astronomical amount of money down there and he lives like a king lol 5 things great website owners do in difficult times

If your sales tank, try out some freelancing and see where it goes.  It will never take off right away, because you'll have to build up your client base, but that's pretty normal.  Take your time and produce the best work possible, and you'll get great reviews and referrals in return 5 things great website owners do in difficult times

Write content for their websites
If you know how to type, you can make a few bucks online being a content writer.  You might not make as much as established writers, who have been doing it for years and have plenty of experience as well as recurring clients, but you can get some people that want to pay $5 or less for a short article.  Think about it, if you sell a 500 word article for $5, you can probably get 5 to 10 of those a day.  You can then build up your client list and pull in recurring jobs whenever someone needs a piece of content for their website 5 things great website owners do in difficult times  I actually sell a 500 word article for $15 because I'm much more experienced than a beginner, but I have great reviews as well as over deliver everything I've ever sent to the client.  My last client ordered 500 words and I wrote up an article that was close to 1,500 words because I couldn't get the point across in just 500 lol.  If you can do that, you'll get the best reviews possible and keep them coming back every day or week for more content 5 things great website owners do in difficult times

Send out discount emails to their email lists
Your email list can be tapped into when you have hard times, but you can't make it obvious that you're hurting or they will see it as a pity email being sent to them asking for a hand out.  You can send out a discount code to the next XX sign ups to your services, or products, and people will tend to jump on them.  In all of my newsletter sign up boxes I say they will get promos and discount codes at times, even if I don't plan on sending them out, because if I hit some hard times I know I can pull in some additional revenue by giving away a discount to newsletter subscribers 5 things great website owners do in difficult times

Offer better referral bonuses to members
People love referral bonuses because they get more for just telling someone about you.  Now, this isn't an affiliate program, you're just getting a referral and then discounting the referrers pricing or giving them something for free in exchange for the referral.  If you really want to give them a commission for their referral, you can, but it's not always necessary.

Sell some of their websites
If you're hitting hard times, you might want to sell a website or two, so you can bring in some quick cash.  Great website owners will do this all the time, mainly because they have dozens of websites up and running, and they will sell them off if they need some additional cash.  There are actually webmasters out there that do this, and realize how profitable it is, so they turn it into a business and sell dozens of websites each year 5 things great website owners do in difficult times

In conclusion
If you want to be considered a great website owner, you will need to stick around even if you're having difficult times.  You can't give up or tap out, because that's just you admitting defeat.  Instead, you need to do whatever it is in your power to keep the business going and profitable, no matter the situation.  If you need to do some freelance type services, you better figure out what actions you can sell, then get to building your client list as soon as possible.  Maybe you want to sell a website or two, which will bring in some quick cash, that's cool too as long as you can get everything exchanged and the money gets to your account 5 things great website owners do in difficult times  Being a great website owner means you know what to do when bad times happen, and they will, so be ready for them by having a plan in place just in case you need to produce some extra income in a short amount of time.

Freelance to make some quick money

Whenever I need money that I do not have I would almost always use "GPT" websites. I do not like to spend money without having a source of income to replace the money that I have spent. For instance, if I go to the grocery store I will spend enough money to make sure that I can easily replace that spent money. Usually I'll spend about $30 USD per trip because I can replace that in a couple of hours of doing some online work. I believe if you are spending money, you should easily be able to replace that money whether by working a day job or by freelancing. If you are a freelancer, you know all too well how much you have to spend, and will use money very wisely. These days it is frustrating being a freelancer, because the market is so saturated.

Write content for their websites

Often at times I am too mentally exhausted to create new content for websites. it pains me because it is such a very easy way to make money. The average rate is about 1000 words for $5. This can be easily done if you are a great writer and have a real passion for it. However, my passion is another type of writing; coding. This mentally exhausts me to the point where I do not want to create anything else.. lol

I do the same thing lol. I'll go to the grocery store and spend $30, just like you, and I'll subtract that from my daily totals so I know what I actually made for the day. I never like spending more than I made in a single day, which is likely why I have money saved up for a rainy day. Things like doctor visits or fixing a random car problem aren't something I factor in because those could be emergencies that must be paid for, and if I only made $50 for the day it won't be enough to cover one car fix or doctors visit lol 5 things great website owners do in difficult times

I know exactly how you feel lol. I write a massive amount of website content for myself, but mainly for clients, and setting up a new website takes me longer than normal because I'm mentally exhausted at the end of the day and don't want to work another minute 5 things great website owners do in difficult times

I am not a great writer and I don’t think I would accept a job that would pay me only $5 for 1,000 words of an article. That is a long article to write that I probably couldn’t finish in one day even if the subject of the article falls under my passion. But I understand that it is happening now because some freelancers agree to such a low pay for writing an article which gives freelancers a bad image when it comes to pricing.

Website owners can also join a small business network or a B2B community like Alignable.com or a Q &A community such as Quora. Both sites ask questions in a forum and your responses to those questions could help build your brand and your reputation.

On the point of offering referral bonuses, I can attest to that with full support because I have had an experience with one forum owner whom I happened to do some good work on his forum. At first he promoted me to a staff in his forum to help him handling some works as a moderator.

It wasn't too long and I got a private message from him with the offer of referral bonuses should I get people to join using his referral link. Being a good business person, he offered me $5 for each person I get for him but I had to renegotiate terms to $10. I did enjoyed working with him.

I know of several forum owners who are also freelancing on their spare time. One such guy told me that he will activate his forum when he gets the budget. But for the meantime, he needs to earn money so he is into some writing websites. I see in them a sort of cycle that when there is a budget, they hire content writers to enliven their forums and blogs. According to them, a forum and a blog are good investments because if it succeeds, it will give them passive income in the future.

I have about a dozen websites and blogs. However, I am not earning much from my blogs and websites. Therefore, I freelance to generate income. When I am not working for clients, then I will be working on my writing projects and blogs/websites. I am also thinking to sell some of my websites. It is becoming increasingly difficult to maintain my websites.

I didn't sell part of my website to make some extra cash I sold it because I was overwhelmed with stress. And I didn't just have stress, my doctor said I was in mental distress. Not only do you have to make sure that the people on your forum are doing what they are supposed to be doing. But you have to worry about the people trying to ruin your forum every day. And it became so much of a problem that it wasn't worth running a forum anymore, so I sold off the forum part of my website and I am turning it into a blog.

I totally agree with your article that it's quite hard when your starting up. You need to work your ass off 24/7 to market your site and wait for the traffic and the profit to come in.

Spending habits should be assessed and reassessed, I go to the grocery thrice a week where I spend $20 per visit that's PHP 1000 in the Philippines, its good for my family of 4 for 2 days. So that's $60 a week spent on food alone, and my biggest weekly online income from all my working sites is $68.35 my average is $62 so I guess I'm still up by $2 a week.

Difficult times are there and what you outline really helps the website owners. At times the website and the owner becomes close buddies and do not want to part ways. Hard times may force them to. At times freelancing is good but you may have been busy with your website and lost touch of your freelancing.
