How Helping Others Can Improve Your Sales

When you start your company, you never think of giving something away for free in order to boost your profits.  Sure, you can always give away a little trinket or discount code, but that's not what will build brand loyalty and keep people coming back for years to come.  What you'll be giving away is information and your time, because it's extremely valuable if you're the main professional within your niche, or trying to be seen as one.  When someone has a question about their business or website, they will go to the masses online and see what others have already asked and what the professionals have answered.  Usually the answers are there, and the person asking the question doesn't always have to post it themselves, which means you can actually get multiple clients from answering just a single question online How Helping Others Can Improve Your Sales

Helping people has always been a great way to boost your sales over time, but not many people do it because it's not an overnight type of success.  People will ask multiple questions, over the course of a few months, before they even think of hiring you to do all of the work for them.  You have to slow play everything and subliminally market yourself and your services at the same time if you want this to go right.  You'll need to show an email or domain name/url at the end of every question as a signature.  Most forums will allow signatures and your email will have one by default that you can edit.  Having this link and email there is how people will contact you, but they only way you will build trust is if you help them out for free in the beginning.  There are plenty of benefits to helping others out with their problems, such as:

Giving away free information
I'm sure you've heard that "content is king" and it's completely true.  How often do you stumble across a "How To" type article to get an answer for your question?  If you're like the majority of the world, you stumble across these fairly often when searching for your answers online.  These types of articles work so well because everyone needs answers, and Google knows your article is exactly what they're looking for, so you get sent traffic.

What you'll want to do is write up dozens of "How To" articles for your industry, answering common questions, and hopefully over time you will be able to get them ranked.  People will start to gravitate towards you if they know you're the source for their answers, and they might outsource work to you later on since you're not their authority on the subject How Helping Others Can Improve Your Sales

Being a free consultant in your industry
This is a big thing when it comes to building trust with your potential clientele.  You will literally be a consultant that does not charge for any of the advice you tell a business or website owner.  You will be their right hand man and not even be a part of the company.  Think of yourself as their dictionary, encyclopedia, and even their advisor all at the same time.  You will tell them what something is and even how to perform a process that you've done hundreds or thousands of times.

This is a slow way to build trust with a potential client and a great way to get people to pay you for your services.  It doesn't matter what industry you're in, if you show them what to do and they feel it's too difficult, they will want to bring someone on board to do the work and usually they will run to you for a recommendation How Helping Others Can Improve Your Sales  This is where you tell them you run a service that does just that, and the potential client just turned into a loyal one because you've been essentially mentoring them towards success How Helping Others Can Improve Your Sales

Helping someone with a problem
If you run a brick and mortar type store, you will need to be close enough to your clients in order to actually solve a problem for them.  Think about it, if you run something like a plumbing service, you won't be able to give away a lot of things for free since you pay for all of them yourself.  If you let them know that you aren't going to charge them for labor, just for parts, they will thank you beyond measure and come back time and time again.  Of course, you won't be able to do this all the time, because you need to make money for your business.  The beauty of this is that they client will save a lot of money with your engagement, and they will always come back to you for additional services as long as they had a good experience the first time.

Your name will begin to spread
One of the best things about this is that your name will begin to go viral within your industry as the person who helps others and doesn't ask for anything in return.  You will have plenty of people flooding to you, asking questions and needing advice, and that will always turn into more sales down the road How Helping Others Can Improve Your Sales

In conclusion
Helping out people with their problems is a great way to build your own brands awareness.  You can become a major authority within your niche simply by giving away free information, answering questions, and being a consultant to anyone that needs help.  You will always be the person they come back to, time and time again, when they need something answered or done for them.  If you're giving away something for free, make sure that you don't lose much money, and you will build trust without spending too much of your own profits.  Sure, you'll lose out on the initial sales, but you will be creating a loyal customer for years to come that will spend money on anything that you recommend.

I agree with ALL of your points here, but I guess my concern would be about spending time on doing free things for others and thereby losing time on tasks I could be getting paid for. I do a lot of free consulting, and that helps me network, but I am rarely paid for this. Still, in the long run, I think that it definitely steers business towards me because I gain the trust of clients, and then, by word of mouth and referrals, I tend to attract more paying clients. Your point about building a loyal customer base in this wat is a good one.

Well, the problem is that you can't give away too much free stuff, but you don't want to make it seem like you're giving away 9 pieces of a 10 piece puzzle and charging an astronomical amount for that 10th piece lol How Helping Others Can Improve Your Sales

What I like to do is offer some free content, but nothing crazy, so maybe a 200 to 500 word article here and there. I will also help someone with a WordPress install if they don't know what they're doing, so they know what I can do but I'm not wasting too much time doing it. Figure out what you can afford to waste time on, and eventually, it won't be wasting time because you'll start getting sign ups from the free work you were doing to help someone out How Helping Others Can Improve Your Sales

This reminds me of my husband when he was working as a computer programmer in a bank. He was fond of tutoring those who wanted to learn that he would be spending more than an hour each day for his tutorials. It was fortunate that his boss was tolerating his kindness to the students for they were mostly employees of the bank too. However his job as a programmer was somewhat neglected.

I agree with your post. People will remember those who have been helpful to them and have gone out of there way to make sure they had what they needed. It is a good thing to give your time and attention to other people. You also will have the added benefit of them wanting to help you when you need it.

Some people are incredibly ungrateful and unappreciative of the good one has done for them. I have witnessed such people and believe me it takes one with more strong mentality to keep helping people to ever continue after such experience. But when you meet the good ones, they will always be eager to appreciate your help and offer to help you out if you have their need.

Some people are extremely ungrateful. In another discussion we were discussing people taking advantage of you, which I witness myself on a daily basis, especially in the programming world. For intsance, if someone bought a script you coded they automatically expect you to make tweaks, and script edits free of charge. Now, what they are suppose to do is, buy the script as programmers will basically code the skeleton (as it were, trying to put it in simple terms for the non-programmer to understand). Now, with the skeleton coded, it is up to the buyer to seek out code changes from another developer if they wish or they could ask the script creator to make such changes. However, with my own scripts people just automatically assume I will make the changes, and in the past I did. However, now I am adding fees and such to anyone who wants an edit in the script. It's almost the same as purchasing a domain and contacting the domain registrar to create a website for you because you bought a domain.. some people are backwards and just don't know what they are doing!

Yeah, even if others don't appreciate your help, even if only one person of those you have helped spread the word of your kindness, it is already a huge boost to your success in the industry.

Publicity and popularity is what you get when you become a source of help to several people and what this literally does for you without your notice or consent is making people value your input and opinions on anything you ever talked on. And things going this way would only get you more followers and visitors and viewers. This eventually turns into increased sales as a result of more people seeking you and your services out.

Internet marketing works in two-way. It is something like you help me, I will help you. When I published my book on Amazon, my friends bought the book and left reviews. They were kind to me because in the past I had also bought and reviewed their books. When I launched my blog, a lot of people visited my blog and left comments on my posts. They did this because over the years I have read and commented on a lot of blogs. If you are beginning to grow, you need to think about reciprocation.

That is nice that your friends bought the books and left reviews but there are some people out there that would say something along the lines of "you told your friends to buy the book just to leave reviews!!". This happens a lot in the world of book selling and other niches. Surely your friends want to support your business endeavors, however some people will see this as a disadvantage to them because they don't have the same reciprocation as you did and would try to tarnish your reputation. How would you go about combating this especially on sites like Amazon?

when you are starting out, it is always your friends and families who come to rescue you. If you are a first-time author, it is very unlikely that a stranger will buy your books if you launch your blog, it is less likely that the strangers will read and leave comments. Your friends and families are the ones who are your first customers and clients. Once you gain some reviews and comments, you can then wow the stranger.

I think it goes way beyond "you scratch my back and I scratch yours". I think a lot of things need to be done with internet marketing. Like having a good product. And also having a good rate for the product. After sales service etc. If those things are taken care of then surely things would improve. And that should show you how things would change over a period of time.

The best way to help people is give them a new idea. Anytime someone is struggling with something, supplying them with an epiphany can not only help solve their problem, but inspire a whole floodgate of fresh, new ideas.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

vinaya
That's true. However, I think if you have an interesting idea, why to waste the idea by giving it to other people. You will benefit more from using the idea for yourself. having said that if you are not going to use that idea, you can always give it to other people.

@vinaya Your method only applies to an idea or scenario that benefits or helps you personally. Which is why in my reply, I mentioned 'anytime someone is struggling with something.' That 'something' they're struggling with, might or most likely... will have nothing to do with you or your business. Many freelancers are in contact with or network with other freelancers, under the umbrella of being part of the freelancing family. But while you may operate in one freelancing space (art for example), they might operate in a totally different freelancing space (t-shirt or apparel). So if I can lend any creative flow to that person, it doesn't hurt me in any way because we're both in totally different areas of the freelancing spectrum. Thus I don't consider them major competition at all.

I missed that point, Sorry. I understand what you are trying to say. I have a friend who works as a children book illustrator. The ideas that could help her may not work for me because we both are in the different area. Likewise, her ideas might help me which might be nothing important to her. Idea sharing will always build a community of people who not only grow by themselves but also help other people to grow.

I believe that in helping others, you will be rewarded somehow. Giving away information? There is a saying that the best things in life are free and that includes free information. When you do that, you enhance your image and your reputation will be stronger when it comes to influence. Some people will even look at you as an expert since the information you shared was valuable to them.

Those freebies also go a long way in establishing a resume for the future, in case you want to maybe dabble in some sort of consulting business. People who operate in the digital space always need some form of consulting. Whether it is on how to reach a target audience, how to navigate social media, how to set up certain mechanisms that pertain to their business, etc.

What I have noticed is that helping others increases the exposure. And people pay attention to the people who are getting more connection. And slowly this helps in gaining more trust. More trust you get the more you can extract out of the social interaction. And that habit is something you have to be understanding in terms of the traffic. So helping people equates to more people loving the website and the service.

This is just the truth. I was reading about shoe sellers and I come across one that is saying that for each shoe that you buy from them, they give one free to the less privileged. This really touched me and I am planning to make an order already. One thing is that you are going to get help by helping others to an extent.

There is this guy that I met on facebook that uses this method to get as much people that he can get in his niche simply because he gives out free information which I consider to be quite essential when we are talking of working to build up the list of those that patronize our business. What he did, because he is a marketer that writes sales copies, is to open a facebook page and get lots of people to join. He took time to continue teaching some simple tips that we can use to boost sales in our business and before you know it, many of the members began asking for him to tutor them privately while they pay. Looking back, I could say that he knew the power of giving free information and how that is going to help make him popular on the internet space.

I think this is the nos 1 top strategy to improve your sales. It's surprising how many people love free things, whether rich or poor. In my opinion that's why discounts and sales are the best way especially for stores with a physical presence to get customers. All the influencers I know online are always open to giving advise, and in that way have seen their names grow. I know of an affiliate marketer in my country that can sell any product by simply endorsing it. This is because his door is always open to people.

I agree with that. your name will spread and will be known for being helpful. I'm sure they will recommend you to others and because of that, you will get more sales by helping others, and the other thing is, there's always a good karma by helping others.
