What happens to your sales over Christmas and the Festive season?

How long have you been freelancing and have you noticed any pattern coming up towards Christmas, over the Christmas period and just after Christmas?

I am just wondering if there is a pattern to the way people spend around this time?

I have no idea because I have not done SEO freelancing before and that is not my main line of work anyway, so even now I don’t have enough clients to see if there is a pattern or not.

Logically thinking I would predict that the sales for any SEO freelancers would go up in October and maybe a little in November, as anyone running a business would most likely be preparing for a surge of sales just before Christmas and also perhaps over the Christmas period so business owners would want all of that work done and dusted with improved rankings by the time December starts.

Then I would think December would be quiet for backlinking and ranking type of work while perhaps social media promotion services would rise?

Then January would be relatively quiet while everyone recovers from Christmas and the new year, business owners would be taking stock of where their business is and planning for the year, with February things going back to normal perhaps with a surge of new orders?

What are your thoughts?

Hey Lynne,
I don't provide SEO services myself so I can't say anything about these specific services. However, what I've noticed is that there's usually less sales during Christmas, most likely due to the fact that people want to spend their time with their families etc. - That said, I've also noticed that there's a HUGE spike in sales, right before these sort of Holidays and my guess is that people want to be "on top of their game" so to speak, and make sure they'll be ready when they come back to work again. I also believe this spike appears due to discounts and "special offers" as most people seem to offer good discounts for multiple services during this time.

When I sold social media services for instance, and with my brand building service I've seen this appear several times so I guess it would be the same with SEO and other services as well.

Cheers!

Andre yes that is exactly what I thought. Before the festive season everyone will want to be jacking up their websites in anticipation for sales before and after Christmas... but during the actual Christmas period I would think that sales for SEO freelancers would be quite slow.

When I had my online store I noticed that hardly anyone bought in December even. I think that was because I am sure my customers were all preparing to go on holiday and didn't want to order anything online since they were concerned it might not arrive before they left, especially when it came to postal deliveries (our postal service here sucks big time).

I agree with you, in seo service there wilk be decrease in sales, but if you are selling goodies online, like cakes deliveries and such it will increase.

I always made a lot of money in the Christmas Holidays, I'm usually free from work, my family is all home and we just relax after a long year. As far as I can remember each year I was active during Christmas and I had slightly more orders than usual, I also "look" for additional opportunities as well as clients since I have the free time.

Usually, most freelancers in Europe take a break during the Holidays, they usually don't work which probably leaves more orders for the rest of us.

I am glad to hear that you experience great sales over Christmas.... says me heading over to check your profile to see what services do well over Christmas LOL.

Yes I think a lot of people will still be working full steam over Christmas and if you are clever enough you can see what types of services will still be very popular!

Well it seems that:
  1. some clients simply decide that they are going to be away and so they are not interested to order anything. But...
  2. there are quite a few who think in advance, and place several orders. So I end up having a lot of orders carrying out over a span of time that includes the christmas period and the first week of January too generally.
  3. There are also some new orders from buyers who never ordered from me generally. These seem to be free during this time, and so they browse and look up services for the new year.

Yes that was my thinking that I need to keep the content coming, so I was thinking how I can keep the content coming without doing any work... that would mean you have to work your ass off over Christmas heehee.

I just haven't even had a chance to think about new content.

I keep hearing about how sales are done during holidays such as christmas, or the other festive holidays however I fail to see that from my own perspective. I do not think sales are down, I think mine at least are still steady. Usually my sales go up in the winter, which seems a little odd, but makes sense if your targeted country is experiencing winter and they stay in their house on their computer.

Also, summer for me is a slow period. I think people who buy my services or scripts are vacationing, or spending time with their families so they don't care about the online stuff as much as they do about their loved ones which is a great thing, and I do not mind if that's the reason why my sales are down for that period.

We will all experience slow sales, but like anything it has it's ups and downs.

I have found that some of the time I do get sales. And some of the products do work. But I think in overall idea for selling things, it may not work well. I just have to work harder on some points and then push one thing at a time. In some cases I have found that festive season has lot of rush for some products. And it does work for sure.

In as much as I have noticed that prices of services tend to increase during the festive period, I do not let them affect the prices of services that I offer my clients during those periods. I could shift prices upward for some of those clients that I feel would be able to afford it and not doing so to every client that comes my way during the period.

It is a general trend that sales will drastically go down after the holiday season because the general public is left with no money on their hands and a ton of gifts which they have to put to good use. It’s like saying buying time is over and let’s start saving again. With the gifts, it is best to use them instead of buying because the budget is just enough for the basic needs of the family.
