Questions Freelancers Ask

I have compiled some questions that I am wondering how every other freelancer on here deals with them. Some are basic questions and others are ones that will require thought. Please take the time to answer them for me so I can get a better feeling for freelancing. I am writing these questions without having SEOclerks in mind.

1. What happens if I do the work and do not get paid? Say I write an article for a client and he does not pay me. How do you handle this?

2. How much do you charge? Do you like to charge per word?

3. How do you deal with those that say freelancing is not a job?

4. Have you ever been paid a flat rate before or do you like being paid hourly?

5. Do you feel that freelancing is the best job that you have ever acquired?

Like I have stated, I was not talking about SEOclerks, because I know that you will get paid there for the work that you have done. I am just meaning all over clients that you have.

1. What happens if I do the work and do not get paid? Say I write an article for a client and he does not pay me. How do you handle this?

Not really much you can do, assuming you are working on your own. The only way to maybe prevent the situation is by keeping control of any accounts you worked on (such as holding the password of the accounts to yourself) until after payment.

2. How much do you charge? Do you like to charge per word?

I don't charge per word for writing. But, it's not a bad idea. Though I suspect my rates would triple if I did.

3. How do you deal with those that say freelancing is not a job?

I don't listen to negative people. Freelancing is a job. And, freelancers are more likely to work 12 hour days than an average employee. Except there is no over time pay. The job ends when you are actually finished, not when it's 5pm.

4. Have you ever been paid a flat rate before or do you like being paid hourly?

At one time, I did a real world job for hourly pay and it was the hardest, most grueling work. I would never do that again unless I really had to.

5. Do you feel that freelancing is the best job that you have ever acquired?

I was co-owner of a local services business for many years and the money was really amazing, at least when we could get customers. Then, the economy went bad. That's when I was thankful for my freelance skills. I have been able to use many of the skills I had already with writing, (and was using, just not being paid for), to earn money for expenses and luxuries. I really feel like I'm contributing very well to my family with my freelance work. So, I don't mind working as much as needed.

1. What happens if I do the work and do not get paid? Say I write an article for a client and he does not pay me. How do you handle this?

If you have a signed contract, you can bring suit in a small claims court.

2. How much do you charge? Do you like to charge per word?

I charge per job, not per word and that goes for blog posts and articles.

3. How do you deal with those that say freelancing is not a job?

Those people are just jealous of our choice to work at home and have financial and personal freedom.

4. Have you ever been paid a flat rate before or do you like being paid hourly?

I dont' like so called 'real world' hourly pay jobs as they are usually demeaning and unfulfilling and lead to nothing.

5. Do you feel that freelancing is the best job that you have ever acquired?

Being a freelancer and writing about what I love is a great job, though it does not always pay what I want.

To me, freelance work is just a means to a financial end and ideally I will find a better way to generate the residual income I really want so that eventually I'm not working at all.

How much of your free time are you willing to devote to work? That's something you should ask yourself if you plan to freelance part time after your regular job hours.

Maybe the only question that I will ask now is if I will enjoy freelancing. I think that enjoyment is what matters much because even if you earn a lot of money in freelancing but you are stressed out every day then I don’t think the money you earned is worth your health. In fact, I am earning very little with my freelancing now but I enjoy learning things especially with the SEO and other technical lessons.
