What are your thoughts on smoking?

You see so much on TV about how bad smoking is, but lots of people still do it. A friend of mine is trying to quit smoking now, but she says it's the hardest thing she has ever done. I want to hear your views on smoking.

I have been a smoker for years... 20yrs, actually.
I have tried to quit only a couple of times, but I'm no where near ready to quit. Not even close. I was asked recently if I felt guilty over smoking, and I explained to them that, if I did feel guilty it would be a sign for me to consider quitting. I have to gain will power to kick the habit, but I'm not ready to quit yet ;)

I smoked for around 3 years total and the last 2 of those I was up to a packet per day(20-30 smokes). I did really enjoy smoking but I decided to quit last year as it was rather expensive and it wasn't of any benefit.

Quitting for me wasn't anything difficult, I just did it. I finished off my packet and simply didn't buy anymore.

I notice a lot of ex-smokers act like it's so disgusting now but I don't seem them any different. I have no interest in smoking now as I've been improving my health a lot but I cannot deny they're very enjoyable. I would say though that in this day and age there is no reason to start smoking, it's just a bad idea. I wouldn't ever judge anyone for it, but it certainly is a terrible idea. The price alone is absolutely insane here in Australia these days.

I don't smoke as I have trouble breathing sometimes anyway. Also, like Karoshio said, smoking is expensive and I have better things to put my money on like Doritos for my kid. What are your thoughts on smoking?

I have smoked and really do enjoy it. But it is getting expensive. I should quit, I need to!

Have you joined a support group locally or online at a forum for quitting smoking? I was reading how this can really help with the process .

My mother was a smoker for many years and now I worry that I suffered second hand smoke damage as a result. Having asthma I don't smoke as it's already difficult for me to breathe.

For health reasons I quit smoking last year and have experienced very positive benefits since including improved lung functions as now I am able to jog more than a mile without being out of breath. It's up to the individual to decide what is right for their own health situation but this idea worked for me.

I have smoked. I can pick it up or stop when I want, though maybe some can't. If you are worried over health consequences, that's one reason not to smoke. Otherwise, do what you want.

My whole family, including myself, has smoked at one point, but now we are ALL smoke free. My aunt was the worst, as she was a chain smoker for decades who eventually got cancer and was told to quit or die, so she quit.

People should quit for health reasons. If the word "CANCER" doesn't scare you into quitting, then it goes to show how strong the addiction really is. Have you ever seen a person battling Cancer? Would you really, honestly want to go through that yourself when you could possibly prevent it?

Yes, I know someone will say "But you're gonna die of something anyway!", but would you purposely step in front of a moving bus if you didn't have to? Yes, we all die, but I'd rather go in a less painful way than with black lungs full of tar (TAR!!) and toxins, knowing that you could at least have some control yourself over lowering that possibility.

Of course, then there's secondhand smoke, so you not only hurt yourself, but people you care about as well. If you want to cut your own life short by inhaling smoke, then I guess that's your decision (kind of like assisted suicide, if you think about it), but affecting the health of those around you ON PURPOSE is a whole other moral compass to follow.

Whatever floats your boat. If you want to go ahead, just stay away from those that don't want to be around it.

For my opinion, I feel it's fine to smoke except females. What are your thoughts on smoking? There are quite many people around me smokes happily. ;) Often I breathe in second hand smoke because smell quite nice but after that then I realised it is very unhealthy. What are your thoughts on smoking?

PS: I doesn't smoke. What are your thoughts on smoking?

Why do you find it acceptable in males and not in females? (Just curious)

It's very weird to see female smokes. Apart from that, it's also very unhealthy for females to smoke than to males. Click here for more info.

Thank you for what you said. My maternal grandmother battled the smoking addiction from the time she was 13 years old, quitting and restarting many times. She suffered heart disease, heart attacks emphysema and even cancer starting at an early age even in her forties. She died young by comparison in her sixties but not before she had many painful years of suffering and surgeries. It was anguish seeing her going through that pain, yet she could not stop. I would not wish that suffering on anyone. I hope others who are affected by smoking addiction can get help for their own health sake and for their family. As you say, this is toxin. And, smoking kills!

May I share the story of my husband. He was a chronic smoker who consumes more than 20 sticks of cigarettes in a day. He was a smoker for more than 30 years when he quit. It was sudden. One morning in June 2007, he felt pain in his abdomen. He had difficulty of breathing and was continually burping. Whenever he would burp, his breathing would ease. He thought he was having a mild heart attack so he prayed. And in his prayer, he felt like talking to God and he promised to quit if he would live longer. Right on that moment, he vowed not to smoke again. He did that with flying colors and there was no withdrawal symptoms. But the greatest thing in that story was the pack of cigarette in his car and the carton of cigarettes in the computer table at home that stayed for more than a month before he disposed of them including his cigarette lighters. He said that he had fully tested himself with the presence of cigarettes that he dig not light up a stick.
