Not just them only but also many things too for many different niches. Virtually any niche you can think of in fact. A blog can really help to pull in extra organic traffic from the Search Engines on anything you write about that is related to your niche. Product reviews and sponsored reviews can be sold as well to other bloggers who want you to write about their blog or products and services etc so it has many avenues for making money with it.
You are right that the blog can get traffic by using SEO methods and it can be profitable in terms of monetization. However the only monetization that I know for blogs is Adsense which is convenient to the blogger since there is nothing to do. Adsense manages the advertisements on the blogs. However Adsense had reduced the rate of revenue sharing down to 50% so it is not that profitable anymore.
I think blogging is mostly dependent on the chosen niche.
This is reinforced when you look at Google Adwords highests annual advertisers. If your niche is not related to those; your missing a large pool of funds.
That is true, it's good to have a blog in a niche that is high in demand and search. You can use Google's Keyword Planner Tool to get a rough estimation of how many times your blogs main targeted keywords are searched. Then that will give you ideas on things you can blog about as well. This will help to get that blog indexed for more things which can send you more organic traffic and then keep repeating this over and over with new posts for different keywords all related to your niche.
It is paying off big-time. The blogisphere has grown exponentially over the past couple of years except now there are many different forms of blogging and categories and sub-categories.
Of course it is, if your site/blog ranks high. A blog is just a component of a website. It lets you add articles and content to it that can attract visitors to your site through the use of different keywords and things in those articles. If your blog ranks high in Google SERPs or gets a lot of traffic and you had ads on it or monetize it in some other way then absolutely a blog can be lucrative and always will be for that matter.
You don't really need to have many skills to run and maintain a blog either. Some basic writing skills will come in handy of course, nobody likes to ready articles that are rife in spelling mistakes and bad grammar. Also you should never use duplicate content on your blog (articles copy and pasted from somewhere else). You should always use your own unique content and provide great content at the same time.
If you are passionate about something or have an interest in something that you are very knowledgeable in then a blog is a great way for you to share that passion and information that you know and have with the rest of the world. If that passion or interest is a popular one and your blog posts are providing great content to the readers that are finding it useful, that can be quite lucrative for you. Not just because you can monetize your blog with ads and other offers and things but because you can use it to collect subscribers to and as anyone and everyone who does that will tell you can be quite lucrative too. That's why they say "the money's in the list".
If I have not considered blogging to be lucrative, I would have never launched my blogs. I believe blogging is lucrative even though I have not build a good income from my blogs. In order to earn from your blogs, you need high traffic that also converts. You blog today and you withdraw money tomorrow. This kind of thing does not work in blogging. If you want to earn from blogging you will have to wait for years.
Yes is my answer to the discussion’s title. Blogging is still lucrative nowadays especially when the term Influencer was coined. A popular blogger is called an Influencer to mean he has the attention of thousands of people. And you can imagine the traffic that the Influencer’s blog can get in a day. That kind of traffic can make the Influencer rich as long as the new traffic keep on coming. Blogging is not really difficult as long as you know the rules and the ways and means to get readers.
