Both formats have their pros and cons, and are popular in using.
For example, the MBOX format has such advantages as simple text formatting, saving attachments in encoded format, different available variants and fast appending of new mail into the mailbox.
Main advantages in case of the PST one are supporting various types of data, high level of safety and control for the data, more advanced format for the files and synchronization with Exchange accounts.
The synchronization of email clients which work with one of these formats is possible only after changing them, for example MS Outlook accepts only the PST files .
