I read somewhere that too much working at night isn't healthy for one's body and mind. A particular writer mentioned developing insomnia as a result of his constantly being awake in the night to work.
Do you have such experience with your working at night? Is it harmful to one's health by always staying too long awake at night to work?
I think for anyone if you're not getting enough sleep for a prolonged period you're going to feel the effects of it. A lack of sleep can cause a number of things - foggy memories, irritability, a difficulty in focusing on tasks - which are all bad things if you're trying to concentrate on writing! Sleep needs to be a priority!

It has been happening to me and it is pretty sad. I don't really enjoy my sleep anymore nowadays and it is something that I should be looking at improving. Also, I noticed that there are times when I will forget the things that I set out to do in a particular day.
Yea it happens sometimes to me too because I sleep very late, so I have a jotter that I just write down my daily task but if it becomes to much I just take a day or two off and have a long night sleep.

Just make sure you get 9 hours of sleep a day. The extra hour is to make sure you're not lacking in rest. Because a lot of times, we fall behind the recommended hours of sleep. Prevention is better than cure.

What I don’t want in lacking sleep is the drowsy feeling that I sometimes lose my focus and I become forgetful. Well, working at night is fine as long as you had enough sleep during the day, like 8 hours of sleep during the day and working at night will be okay, I had a work before as a call center agent, we have our night shift, and I can say that there's nothing wrong to work at night as long as you have enough sleep during the day.

8 hours of sleep seems to be a long time. I have about 5 hours. I sleep late and wake up early just to make ends meet. I do this at night.
I am totally against the 8 hours sleep, it's too much so I sleep just for 6 hours and during exams I slash it to four.

The effect in sleeping during daytime is that your body will not get melatonin. Melatonin comes from sunlight and it helps our body to develop a hormone which is melatonin to become sleepy at night. There are tablet before that I took. It was not a medicine actually, it is a pills like a vitamins that contains Melatonin. It is very effective. There are other brands like Speepasil which is good also. You can consult your doctor first before you take it.
I like working at night. It's quiet and I can concentrate better. And i like the cool air during the wee hours past midnight, I always open my window or the main door when I'm working at this hour. I sleep during the day about 2-4 hours and I would feel refreshed and rested again ready for another nights work.

I used to work too late at night. I thought it was good to work on that kind of schedule. At first I was really enjoying it because of the quiet surrounding and strong wifi connection. As much as i know about the health implications of working constantly till late at night, I always see myself doing it; it has become a reoccuring decimal. When i think of how much more i can deliver if i decide to stretch more into the night, coupled with the fact that I'm not readily chanced to do my writings during the day, I often see myself keeping late night pearing through my phone's screen. And I don't escape the implications —tiredness and drowsiness during the day and all that. Most times I started the day tired, and ended it that way, only to feel i still need to do some typing before going to bed in the night. I can’t say that I’ve been affected by working too late at night, simply because I make an active effort of not doing so. I’ve had problems with insomnia for most of my life, so I went through a whole list of techniques and strategies in order to remedy my sleeping issues.
One of those techniques was to make a habit of putting down any work or psychologically strenuous activities at least two to three hours before bed. I can honestly say it’s made a huge difference in my sleep habits. These days I get up early in the morning, get all of my work done by mid-afternoon, and then the rest of the day is just for leisurely activities and hobbies.

I’ve read a lot of studies about insomnia and other sleep problems, and I feel like for many people it can be that they are attached to devices right until they go to bed. Even things like the light emitted by computers, tablets and smartphones makes our brains not understand its time for sleep - and for a prolonged period of time that can be really detrimental.
You make a good point about light being emitted from our devices. Our circadian rhythm is actually influenced by the levels of light our eyes are exposed to, specifically in the blue wavelength. When we’re exposed to blue light, our body doesn’t produce melatonin because it’s under the assumption that it’s daytime and it isn’t time for sleep yet.
Guess what emits blue light? Our monitors and phones. That’s why there are blue light filter applications (I use flux) which filter out blue light around sunset, so that you can still look at your screen without it influencing your circadian rhythm.
I turn mine on about two hours before bedtime if I’m still at the computer, and it helps me get to sleep a lot faster.

I agree with this analysis. If you are a night owl it is really easy to get insomnia, when you want to sleep at normal hours. For the past year I have struggled with this. I have tried to set my body to sleep between 10pm-12am, and wake up by 7.00am. It has been struggle. The worst thing about sleeping late is that your body does not get enough rest and you are not productive and the next day you feel sluggish.
Have you tried taking naps in the afternoon? This does the trick for me, although I can't sleep more than 30 minutes or else I'll wake up feeling more tired than before. But napping sure is a big improvement on energy levels for the rest of the day.
It really depends on you as a person and trying to find a schedule that fits your lifesttle. I've been able to craft a business and personal life schedule that accounts for the fact that anything I do before 9am is going to be terrible and all the work I do at night is of a significantly higher quality. This has been true my entire life and no matter how I've restructured my life or learned new habits it has never benefited me to try to be a morning person.
That being said, I have struggled with not staying up too late, trying to get all my work done in one night. That's also an equal recipe for disaster. I think the important thing is to understand how much sleep your body needs (some people its only 5 hours while for others it could be 10) and creating a lifestyle that will let you be your healthiest while also maintaining a healthy and successful career.
I agree. Nobody fully knows your own body but only you. You're the only one who has the authority to change your sleeping habits. You may depend on your tasks o time scheduling but you have all the power to control your sleeping lifestlye.
It depends. But on the most part, it's not really that good to stay up at night. It's much better for us to stay naturally awake during the day. Because our circadian rhythm is set to that state of wakefulness. If we're constantly changing our sleep patterns, it will prove difficult for a lot of us.

You're right! However, I work as a freelance, which sometimes is positive and sometimes is negative. On the positive side, I make my own schedule. On the negative, I usually put too much pressure on myself to continue working, which results in bad health habits.

I don't think I agree with that article. For the first couple of months sure, one has to sacrifice some things to achieve others, but if you are spending all your energy in work, leaving you to become ill or have serious health issues in the future, then you're doing something wrong and that job is not good for you. It's all a balance, for instance, if you're better working at night because of silence (I prefer working at night too) try to get at least 7 hours of sleep a day, be it all at once and wake up late, or take several 20-minute naps during the day. Just think that if you start getting sick, it will be worse as you won't be able to work at all.
The article might refer to the word 'sacrifice' only for short-term. It even said that for one to make it to the top, at some point, you need to sacrifice family, maybe it's about the amount of time you spend with them. The time of working depends on the metabolism of the person. We have the so called night owls who could produce better output when they work after midnight and there are the early birds like me who works better in the early morning. Of course there are the daytime workers who work well during the office hours. If you are not a night own and you will be working late at night then your health may suffer.
Since many online people are active in the communities where I am a member but they are in a different time zone, I once tried to switch my work hours so that I would be awake the same time that they were up and working. That meant I would be much later at night, It did not work out very well for me. My body totally rejected the time change.
I know what you mean. I live in South America, and one time I decided to switch my schedule to be up at the same time as my business partner, who lives in India. The results were catastrophic, and that entire week was a complete waste of time as I couldn't work at all, my body was completely confused, and generally speaking I was not able to achieve anything.
I can relate to what you mean, and I can easily tell that it has something to do with your sleep. If you work at night, you need to make sure that you sleep during the day. Close out your windows, turn on the AC and get the usual 8 hours.
In my lifetime, I only know 3 people who were really productive working during nighttime hours: my late sister, my husband, and one of my sons. Their biological clock is set backward. They can sleep through the day and can be up all night. I don't know how they can sleep during daylight hours. They don't even use earplugs to block out the sound. Even if you make your room dark, people are still outside making noise! You can't block the noise. Yet they manage to sleep through it all.
I think they must have learned to sleep through noise ever since they were little. It's the only explanation. I've tried to sleep so many times with noise around and I can't, it's too difficult.
Their body clock has already adjusted to the time and probably with the environment too. It might also do something with your way of thinking, knowing that you need to get some sleep no matter what it takes because you still have to work at night.

Yes, that's true. Our boss already said that working in that kind of field will give you poor health as it requires long hours of work and no sleep. What I noticed about our bosses they became obese and addicted to coffee. They also smoke served as stress reliever and that's really bad to our health and will give us sickness.
That is really bad. And for some they are very addictive to cigarette because of the high stress of working on that kind of environment.
I've worked too late at night before and it was bad since I had a very low blood pressure. Working late at night can also weaken your immune system. I believe that it is still different to sleep at night than sleeping in the morning after working at night. Your sleep at night is more satisfying.

I mean, people go out partying at night - indulging in all manner of debauchery like drugs, alcohol, etc. Not to mention never going to bed at a decent our. So wouldn't that take a toll on their health more than banging away at a keyboard until 3 AM?
I wonder if a lot of people's ability to work late at night has to do with age, too. I know that back in my 20's I could do an all-nighter party and still go to university in the morning. Oh, to be young. Now in my 30's if I don't get a solid sleep at night I'm like a walking zombie in the morning. It's not pretty! I guess maybe it does have something to do with it.
I think you have the point. I understand that there are people who love to party at night and that is something that they got used to doing. But of course, the effects of these activities on one's health cannot be felt right away. You might think that those people are still healthy but who knows that they can get a disease in the future. The health problems that old people are facing now are just the results of how they treated themselves in the past. If you are still young but you keep on abusing yourself then don't expect to be healthy when you get older.

Yes, I can relate with eye bags. It's not a good look. It makes you appear much older than you normally would. Plus, not enough sleep makes your skin dry. It can also cause acne and possible eye infections. Not a good start to your week.
Right! And not just eye bags but dark circles. Some people also get a lot of pimples due to lack of sleep. I think it is still better to take care of yourself before it is too late. I used to work in a graveyard shift and it was really hard. Whatever I did, I was not able to remove my dark circles on my eyes. You can just cover them with concealer but would not cure them.
Yes, that's bad. Graveyard shift usually makes us feel sick the longer we do it. It's not the the ideal time to work. Especially, if you're not getting enough sleep after working the whole night.
It's really hard to get rid of eye bags. Sometimes the only solution is to get used to it. And that's after using concealer.

It depends. Like how long have you been doing it? Stuff like that. We practically live in different time zones. So it's normal for some parts of the world to be asleep while others stay awake. The problem is when you go somewhere with a different time compared to your usual schedule.
It's called circadian rhythm. It's our bodies biological clock for when we should sleep and stay awake.

Here in my country, people who do work at night get a night differential of 10%-20%. Meaning they get paid from working 21:00 - 6:00. But given a choice, I wonder what they would prefer - daytime or night time.
Yes, in my country I think it's something like 25% extra pay for working overnight compared to standard daytime rates. That goes up to 50% extra if your overnight shifts are on the weekends. There is a definite financial incentive to work overnight if you're capable of doing it, but it always just made me feel so tired.
Wow, 50% is a huge pay bump. However, there are now two factors involved: one is you get to work late at night, and two you work weekends. I guess it's okay if you utterly don't have a life.

For me I am not anymore affected whenever I am working late at night because I was already used to it and besides I am already comfortable doing it since everyday I usually encountered such routine. It is definitely been affecting the health. And even more so the mental health. it is like you are constantly working and going on. And there does not seem to be any holiday. And no way for the things to properly work around. I also hope to work with the few things with the daily routine. And the food eating habits also change with working too late. So one needs to mind that he or she needs more sleep. That's how it can be useful in many ways.
Creating a daily routine is good for the body and mind. When I'm only holiday, I work late at night and wake up late after having enough sleep.However, this can only be achieved if you are a full he freelancer.If you have a day job you'll find yourself interrupting the routine to be at work.

Working late at night is not healthy. It alters our body clock and beside human's nature is to sleep at night not in daylight. Our body would have a difficulty in adjusting that kind of routine. Most people who works at night have different aura compared to those who sleep at daylight. They are easily prone to diseases it can due to some factors like smoking, too much caffeine and loss of vitamins and minerals.
If you work in shifts, it is harder to eat healthily or exercise regularly. Not only is it harder to get a salad at night, but it's also more likely that you want to eat something else to stay awake. This makes people feel tempted by snacks and takeaways. It may be more convenient to eat pizza or hamburgers, and these foods can make you feel better, but obviously eating them every night is not very healthy.
Also, you are more likely to crawl to the gym at the end of a workday than to do it at the end of a shift if you have been awake all night and the only thing you crave is sleep.
