Have you been affected by working too late at night?

I read somewhere that too much working at night isn't healthy for one's body and mind. A particular writer mentioned developing insomnia as a result of his constantly being awake in the night to work.

Do you have such experience with your working at night? Is it harmful to one's health by always staying too long awake at night to work?

I think for anyone if you're not getting enough sleep for a prolonged period you're going to feel the effects of it. A lack of sleep can cause a number of things - foggy memories, irritability, a difficulty in focusing on tasks - which are all bad things if you're trying to concentrate on writing! Sleep needs to be a priority!

It has been happening to me and it is pretty sad. I don't really enjoy my sleep anymore nowadays and it is something that I should be looking at improving. Also, I noticed that there are times when I will forget the things that I set out to do in a particular day.

Yea it happens sometimes to me too because I sleep very late, so I have a jotter that I just write down my daily task but if it becomes to much I just take a day or two off and have a long night sleep.

Nice habit I will actually try it out and see how well it will work out for me. I have a habit of sleeping late as well and this might affect me without knowing so it is important to start readying myself early enough.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Steve5
Having more than enough sleep is much preferable. We need to have good rest if we hope to accomplish difficult tasks. Lack of sleep can also affect our performance. Our quality of thinking becomes impaired when we're too tired.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Jelineex
Yes, you are right. Everything is difficult when our mind and body is tired. It's hard to performed or finish one task if you're sleepy. I can't think of anything except yawning. It's best to take care of ourselves.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Steve5
That's always the problem with lack of sleep. I also found out that being sleepy can sometimes feel like you're drunk.

It has similar symptoms of drowsiness and lack of concentration. This is why we tend to slur our words whenever we're falling asleep.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Steve5
That could be an early sign of overwork. It's when our bodies are not getting sufficient rest after a hard day's work. Sleep is important for our bodies. It's the time when we recover and improve our overall functions for the next day.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

It happens to me a lot of times and the hardest part is when you are sleepy but can't sleep.

It's actually scary to know that the effects of not getting enough sleep is evident on you and you know that it's happening. But, sometimes, it's hard to fight it because there are things which we have to do overnight for tomorrow. I feel sad about it.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

ElectorAlexande
Yea, I have experienced such and it wasn't pleasant because I kept on struggle to keep up to the extent I was using pill, I nearly pass out.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Steve5
That's horrible. It would really be bad if you kept doing that. Events such as this serves as a wake up call. We're reminded of the fragile nature of our bodies. We can only do so much before things take a turn for the worse.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

That where time management comes in, so you will still have enough sleep during the night.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Steve5
Yes, it's very important to do that. Time well managed keeps us healthy and confident in our work life. We don't stress out over schedules. Most of all, we feel great throughout the day.

There are times I want to review a book before the timeline. I read deep into the night and after finishing, I review the book. When I go to bed sleep evades me and it takes too long before I sleep.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

jayjaydimson
Yes, because the knowledge that you just acquired from reading it before you go to bed is still functioning, that's why I suggest taking some rest first before you go to bed after you read books.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Steve5
You're right. It helps you better understand what you just read. And it can become long term memory because it's the last thing you remember before falling asleep. I think I read this in an article about how to remember stuff.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

mcnasci24
Unless you make it a habit, these effects will be gone in a couple of days. Puffy eyes, tiredness during the day and low energy can be fixed with a good night's sleep, so don't worry if you have to pull an all-nighter every once in a while.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Steve5
That's nice of you to share. However, I still would recommend we avoid them as much as possible. We can never belittle the limited extent of our body's capacity.

Sleep is the best recuperation we get on a daily basis. So compromising on that part can and will eventually lead to possible complications. I just hope that we don't pull all night shifts more than once a month.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

mcnasci24
Yes, you're absolutely right.
I've been avoiding all-nighters like the plague. It messes so much with my energy levels, and it's not worth it. I remember in my college days I wouldn't mind it so much, but now it really takes a toll on the body.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Steve5
That's right. We easily fall into the mindset that just because we're not yet too old, we're immune to possible consequences. But it's wrong.

Everything leads to something. Just as a good lifestyle increases lifespan, the opposite happens for overworking and lack of proper sleep.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

mark8625
I understand what you have said. It is true that because of many things to do and need to finish on time we are force to continue it at night and sometimes it takes several hours to finish it. In the end we never see it almost early morning and yet we still continue working.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

mcnasci24
I have no idea of the number of times I thought it was still kind of early and all of a sudden I noticed the sun coming out on my window, realizing I spent the whole night working up until the next day. After that happened several times, I make a point in stopping every two hours to stretch my legs, drink a glass of water, and be aware of the time. That way, I can go to sleep in a reasonable hour.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Steve5
That's an interesting word choice. Reasonable hour. It could mean many things depending on the person. It's worth noting that sleep specialists actually recommend we get 9 hours of sleep. Especially, for those working tirelessly throughout the day.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Steve5
That's really sad. The fact that we can't avoid sleeping late says a lot. Our daily schedules can take their toll on our bodies. It's best we live a healthy and productive life. We can never be too careful when it comes to sleep.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

I feel you, we have work to do and we need to sacrifice our sleep for money.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

We are humans and our human body is originally designed to work for a period of time only. Our body needs enough rest to be ready for tomorrows work. Working late at night for a long period of time can result into various sickness and diseases.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

ElectorAlexande
Yea thats true and you mentioned the consequences correctly, I think lack of sleep is unhealthy but I cant stop doing it because it's during the night that I feel relax to do thing.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Steve5
Just make sure you get 9 hours of sleep a day. The extra hour is to make sure you're not lacking in rest. Because a lot of times, we fall behind the recommended hours of sleep. Prevention is better than cure.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

allyn2017
Yes, I usually feel those things. I know how it is unhealthy but I can't avoid it because of the deadlines and my brain seem to work at night more than at day.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

mcnasci24
I think it's all a matter of balance. If you like to work at night until late, just make sure you wake up a little later than usual. Or try to have a 20-minute nap in the afternoon, that is a quick fixer that makes a huge difference.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

mark8625
That is right. Balance and proper time management in order to us have a better sleep every night. We should set a schedule and plans.

I don't like to work at night. My sleep is affected if I work at night. I feel I would collapse if I lack sleep.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Yes that is true if we are not used to it we will not really feel comfortable about it, we really need to have a good sleep so that we can focus on our duties and responsibility. I sometimes feel sleepy afterwards whenever I am working late at night especially if I don't have a good sleepy in the previous days.

What I don’t want in lacking sleep is the drowsy feeling that I sometimes lose my focus and I become forgetful. When I have work in the office and I had to stay awake all night due to some activity like a party, I would take the next day off instead of going to work with a bad condition of my mind. When I was younger it is just fine to stay late and wake up early but at my age now that is not advisable anymore.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

jayjaydimson
Well, working at night is fine as long as you had enough sleep during the day, like 8 hours of sleep during the day and working at night will be okay, I had a work before as a call center agent, we have our night shift, and I can say that there's nothing wrong to work at night as long as you have enough sleep during the day.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

amelia88
I’ve worked at night before too in a similar environment, but science actually says too much work at night isn’t good for you!

Long-term night shift work is associated with an increased risk of certain cancers, as well as metabolic problems, heart disease, ulcers, gastrointestinal problems and obesity. ... People who work night shifts or rotating shifts also often don't sleep enough, and long-term sleep deprivation is known to be bad for health.

That’s directly from the National Sleep Foundation. The quality of sleep a person gets during the day just isn’t the same as night time sleep because of our circadian rhythms.

According to the article that I've read, our body usually recharges from 11PM to 4AM. It's the time that we should rest our body. Working too late at night could result in health problems. Sleeping during night time which our body needs is different from sleeping during the daytime. Hair fall and weak gums are some of the possible problems you'll have when you abuse yourself of always working too late at night. I actually experience this.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

It’s crazy when you think about how many things suffer when sleep is affected - even those physical manifestations of poor sleep. I’ve really got to be diligent with trying to go to sleep earlier each day. Sometimes I just get caught up watching TV which is totally unnecessary.

I also find 8 hours to be a long time. I would rather watch a nice movie or listen to music because at some point the sleep will be gone. 4-5hours is good for me.

Forty days to two months without food a person could die but ten days to two weeks without sleep someone could die. A famous doctor in our country once said in one of his health forum that too much staying late at night can decrease water level in your body twice than speaking and any other activities. Because of this our body becomes acidic and we are prone to every kinds of diseases.

Of course it is definitely harmful if you are deprived of the prescribed sleeping hours needed by your body. I am actually experiencing the harmful effects of working late at night and not having enough hours of sleep lately. A few days ago my throat became sore and I had a cough. My body is also kind of swollen and it's really hard for me to get up from bed. That is why I am actually inactive for two days straight in the forum. My brain became a bit lazy and I just wanted to sleep as much as I could because I was really very tired. It's harmful if you don't get any sleep within 24-48 hours. But working at nights doesn't mean you can't sleep during the day right? A simple solution is to adjust your sleeping schedule. If you're awake at night then sleep in the daytime and vise versa. A person can even go without sleep for extended periods of time but after that he should have a good long sleep.

The effect in sleeping during daytime is that your body will not get melatonin. Melatonin comes from sunlight and it helps our body to develop a hormone which is melatonin to become sleepy at night. When I worked nights, my life changed drastically. At first, it absolutely was coping with the adjustment of my time. When I got through that, and time went along, it appeared to change my outlook on life. I lived in a very different way than my family and friends. I felt a lot of isolated.

That’s such a good point you make about night work being quite isolating. Sleep deprivation may be bad for your health. The negative effects will vary from individual to individual. Some people for example can sleep for only two or three hours and it's enough rest for them.

I don't work at night and couldn't even if I tried so the negative effects of sleep deprivation have never had to worry me. In any case as I doubt this would affect me much because for over 15 years I only manage about three hours of sleep every night.

As much as i know about the health implications of working constantly till late at night, I always see myself doing it; it has become a reoccuring decimal. When i think of how much more i can deliver if i decide to stretch more into the night, coupled with the fact that I'm not readily chanced to do my writings during the day, I often see myself keeping late night pearing through my phone's screen. And I don't escape the implications —tiredness and drowsiness during the day and all that. Most times I started the day tired, and ended it that way, only to feel i still need to do some typing before going to bed in the night. But I'm trying to cub this, by finding much time to rest during weekends, and trying to organize my day in such a way that I'd have a little time for my writing, so that whrn night comes I'd have little or no work to do

I can’t say that I’ve been affected by working too late at night, simply because I make an active effort of not doing so. I’ve had problems with insomnia for most of my life, so I went through a whole list of techniques and strategies in order to remedy my sleeping issues.

One of those techniques was to make a habit of putting down any work or psychologically strenuous activities at least two to three hours before bed. I can honestly say it’s made a huge difference in my sleep habits. These days I get up early in the morning, get all of my work done by mid-afternoon, and then the rest of the day is just for leisurely activities and hobbies.

Thinking too much about work or another project before bed inevitably results in a sleepless night.

I’ve read a lot of studies about insomnia and other sleep problems, and I feel like for many people it can be that they are attached to devices right until they go to bed. Even things like the light emitted by computers, tablets and smartphones makes our brains not understand its time for sleep - and for a prolonged period of time that can be really detrimental.

You make a good point about light being emitted from our devices. Our circadian rhythm is actually influenced by the levels of light our eyes are exposed to, specifically in the blue wavelength. When we’re exposed to blue light, our body doesn’t produce melatonin because it’s under the assumption that it’s daytime and it isn’t time for sleep yet.

Guess what emits blue light? Our monitors and phones. That’s why there are blue light filter applications (I use flux) which filter out blue light around sunset, so that you can still look at your screen without it influencing your circadian rhythm.

I turn mine on about two hours before bedtime if I’m still at the computer, and it helps me get to sleep a lot faster.

Working late at night is a struggle for those people who are busy all day long. I also struggled working late at night because I always feel sleepy whenever I am working at night. That makes my work productivity inefficient because it lessens my capability to do work. I also believe that working late at night make cause health problems that's why I would prefer to work at day.

I agree with this analysis. If you are a night owl it is really easy to get insomnia, when you want to sleep at normal hours. For the past year I have struggled with this. I have tried to set my body to sleep between 10pm-12am, and wake up by 7.00am. It has been struggle. The worst thing about sleeping late is that your body does not get enough rest and you are not productive and the next day you feel sluggish.

Have you tried taking naps in the afternoon? This does the trick for me, although I can't sleep more than 30 minutes or else I'll wake up feeling more tired than before. But napping sure is a big improvement on energy levels for the rest of the day.

It really depends on you as a person and trying to find a schedule that fits your lifesttle. I've been able to craft a business and personal life schedule that accounts for the fact that anything I do before 9am is going to be terrible and all the work I do at night is of a significantly higher quality. This has been true my entire life and no matter how I've restructured my life or learned new habits it has never benefited me to try to be a morning person.

That being said, I have struggled with not staying up too late, trying to get all my work done in one night. That's also an equal recipe for disaster. I think the important thing is to understand how much sleep your body needs (some people its only 5 hours while for others it could be 10) and creating a lifestyle that will let you be your healthiest while also maintaining a healthy and successful career.

I agree. Nobody fully knows your own body but only you. You're the only one who has the authority to change your sleeping habits. You may depend on your tasks o time scheduling but you have all the power to control your sleeping lifestlye.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

It depends. But on the most part, it's not really that good to stay up at night. It's much better for us to stay naturally awake during the day. Because our circadian rhythm is set to that state of wakefulness. If we're constantly changing our sleep patterns, it will prove difficult for a lot of us.

I only really work at night out of absolute desperation if my day has been so hectic that I couldn’t get things done in normal waking hours. But gosh, I notice how grouchy and irritated I am after a few late nights! It’s not fun being around me when I’m sleep deprived!

Yes, working late at night has taken a toll on my health. I've gained a bit of weight, haven't been able to sleep more than 6 hours a day and might get cranky easily. Staying up at night changes your body and your mind. If you're thinking about starting to work at night, take some precautions first. Set an hour to sleep and under no circumstance break that rule, no matter how much work you have. If you do, your body cycle will start changing and it will be very difficult to revert it back to its normal state.

Some night jobs have a break room where employees can catch 45 minutes to an hour or sleep while working night-shift. This, of course is only the case with corporate companies, and not all but some of them.

You're right! However, I work as a freelance, which sometimes is positive and sometimes is negative. On the positive side, I make my own schedule. On the negative, I usually put too much pressure on myself to continue working, which results in bad health habits.

There is an article I read before that said one of the sacrifices we need to take to be successful is to compromise our health. I guess it depends on the individual. Like as for myself, I am more inclined to work at night because it is quieter and gets me to focus on performing my job well.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

mcnasci24
I don't think I agree with that article. For the first couple of months sure, one has to sacrifice some things to achieve others, but if you are spending all your energy in work, leaving you to become ill or have serious health issues in the future, then you're doing something wrong and that job is not good for you. It's all a balance, for instance, if you're better working at night because of silence (I prefer working at night too) try to get at least 7 hours of sleep a day, be it all at once and wake up late, or take several 20-minute naps during the day. Just think that if you start getting sick, it will be worse as you won't be able to work at all.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

The article might refer to the word 'sacrifice' only for short-term. It even said that for one to make it to the top, at some point, you need to sacrifice family, maybe it's about the amount of time you spend with them. And thanks for the advice, so far I do get 8 hours of sleep every day, so I'm all good.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Ahh, now it makes a little bit more sense. Still, health is something one should never sacrifice, as it will catch up with you in the future. All the bad health habits take a toll on the body. So glad you get the necessary rest! That is the most important part of health, along with good eating habits.

Thanks. Now my circumstances have changed, and my employer demands that I should work on my daytime. Now, this would be hard for me as I'm more comfortable at night, we'll see.

The time of working depends on the metabolism of the person. We have the so called night owls who could produce better output when they work after midnight and there are the early birds like me who works better in the early morning. Of course there are the daytime workers who work well during the office hours. If you are not a night own and you will be working late at night then your health may suffer.

Since many online people are active in the communities where I am a member but they are in a different time zone, I once tried to switch my work hours so that I would be awake the same time that they were up and working. That meant I would be much later at night, It did not work out very well for me. My body totally rejected the time change.

I know what you mean. I live in South America, and one time I decided to switch my schedule to be up at the same time as my business partner, who lives in India. The results were catastrophic, and that entire week was a complete waste of time as I couldn't work at all, my body was completely confused, and generally speaking I was not able to achieve anything.

I can relate to what you mean, and I can easily tell that it has something to do with your sleep. If you work at night, you need to make sure that you sleep during the day. Close out your windows, turn on the AC and get the usual 8 hours.

In my lifetime, I only know 3 people who were really productive working during nighttime hours: my late sister, my husband, and one of my sons. Their biological clock is set backward. They can sleep through the day and can be up all night. I don't know how they can sleep during daylight hours. They don't even use earplugs to block out the sound. Even if you make your room dark, people are still outside making noise! You can't block the noise. Yet they manage to sleep through it all.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

mcnasci24
I think they must have learned to sleep through noise ever since they were little. It's the only explanation. I've tried to sleep so many times with noise around and I can't, it's too difficult.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Their body clock has already adjusted to the time and probably with the environment too. It might also do something with your way of thinking, knowing that you need to get some sleep no matter what it takes because you still have to work at night.

I experience working at night and day. We only had naps like 15 minutes long and back to work again. It was very stressful knowing that you worked for about almost one day since it was a rush project that should be done for two weeks.

I assumed it was very hard situation. Lacking of sleep may cause many bad effects in our body. We might feel less energy and have a short temper too. Sleeping 7-8 hours a day must always do.

Yes, that's true. Our boss already said that working in that kind of field will give you poor health as it requires long hours of work and no sleep. What I noticed about our bosses they became obese and addicted to coffee. They also smoke served as stress reliever and that's really bad to our health and will give us sickness.

I've worked too late at night before and it was bad since I had a very low blood pressure. Working late at night can also weaken your immune system. I believe that it is still different to sleep at night than sleeping in the morning after working at night. Your sleep at night is more satisfying.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Judas2018
@superlicca I don't know. I think it's different for different people when it comes to working at night. I mean, people go out partying at night - indulging in all manner of debauchery like drugs, alcohol, etc. Not to mention never going to bed at a decent our. So wouldn't that take a toll on their health more than banging away at a keyboard until 3 AM?

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

I wonder if a lot of people's ability to work late at night has to do with age, too. I know that back in my 20's I could do an all-nighter party and still go to university in the morning. Oh, to be young. Now in my 30's if I don't get a solid sleep at night I'm like a walking zombie in the morning. It's not pretty! I guess maybe it does have something to do with it.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

I think you have the point. I understand that there are people who love to party at night and that is something that they got used to doing. But of course, the effects of these activities on one's health cannot be felt right away. You might think that those people are still healthy but who knows that they can get a disease in the future. The health problems that old people are facing now are just the results of how they treated themselves in the past. If you are still young but you keep on abusing yourself then don't expect to be healthy when you get older.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

That's true, everything adds up even if we don't see the impact of it immediately. It's part of why living a healthy and balanced life is so important. It really does have long term repercussions if you're constantly doing things that are negative for your health.

That's true. It's very easy for us to take advantage of our sleeping time. We need to realize that this is what informs the rest of our days. Getting good night's sleep gives you a better outlook in life. You perform better for the day ahead and you look good.

Because let's face it. A lot of us look haggard when we don't get the recommended 8 hours of continuous sleep.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

I agree with you. Having enough sleep will make you look better. You will look so fresh. Sleeping does wonder to our skin. And those who don't have enough sleep will so tired and get eyebags,

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Yes, I can relate with eye bags. It's not a good look. It makes you appear much older than you normally would. Plus, not enough sleep makes your skin dry. It can also cause acne and possible eye infections. Not a good start to your week.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Right! And not just eye bags but dark circles. Some people also get a lot of pimples due to lack of sleep. I think it is still better to take care of yourself before it is too late. I used to work in a graveyard shift and it was really hard. Whatever I did, I was not able to remove my dark circles on my eyes. You can just cover them with concealer but would not cure them.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Steve5
Yes, that's bad. Graveyard shift usually makes us feel sick the longer we do it. It's not the the ideal time to work. Especially, if you're not getting enough sleep after working the whole night.

It's really hard to get rid of eye bags. Sometimes the only solution is to get used to it. And that's after using concealer.

I don't know, and I don't think so. I guess it has to do something with the norm. Like what if everybody is working at night and sleeps during the day? Will it make a difference?

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Steve5
It depends. Like how long have you been doing it? Stuff like that. We practically live in different time zones. So it's normal for some parts of the world to be asleep while others stay awake. The problem is when you go somewhere with a different time compared to your usual schedule.

It's called circadian rhythm. It's our bodies biological clock for when we should sleep and stay awake.

Here in my country, people who do work at night get a night differential of 10%-20%. Meaning they get paid from working 21:00 - 6:00. But given a choice, I wonder what they would prefer - daytime or night time.
