If you had to choose only one, would you rather set up a website for your business or a social media page? Which do you think will have a better chance of generating more clicks and a wider reach? Share your experiences and/or thoughts.
Social media is necessity. But the traffic needs to be diverted to the website. So one needs to work on both sources for the website traffic. I think social media page needs to have likes to reach people. So getting those likes and share is a hardwork in itself. So make sure to have website. And only use the social media to drive the traffic to that website.

Social media is really the easiest way to drive traffic to a website these days. It's long term and short term dividends are far better than SEO in my opinion. Although, that doesn't mean SEO should be completely ignored.
Just like e-mail marketing, social media allows you communicate together with your potential clients and encourage them to buy. Once more, you must offer compelling reasons to like your fb page or follow you on Twitter. However you must also share content that gets them visiting your weblog or interacting along with your brand on a ordinary basis to remind them why they stopped through your website within the first place.
I think email marketing can't be compared with the social media. The reason being email marketing has dedicated userbase. And one needs to have some specific number of the users for that to work around. I am using the email marketing for one client and driving traffic there on the site. It's also effective.
Yes social media traffic definitely goes long term. It can save from chasing SEO all day. I have seen people spending more money on social media and getting lot better traffic. I think SEO just goes harder every day in and out. So in that context it's better to focus on social media.

Yes that is how the funnels work in the real life. And so does the same process with the web as well. I think a lot of time the PPC works the same. PPC is a hard work though. Takes time to get it right and get the proper traffic.
I agree. PPC is something that you should exert effort to in order to gain much traffic. Not every person in your site will click it so you would have to catch their attention in order to get their click. And that is not that easy, I could say.
I think PPC being more or less experiment. Not a lot of people understand how to work with the PPC. And on that note doing the experiment for the social media and adwords is one way. If one can maintain the performance for specific keyword, they earn a good amount.
I don't think we can choose between a business website and social media. If we do not have a business, what will we do with social media? We need social media to drive traffic and generate sales. However, if I am only allowed to choose one, I will choose business website as there are other ways to get traffic to business website apart from social media. I have plans to engage in affiliate marketing and what’s holding me is the need for having my own site. I couldn’t rely on social media because that is not mine and free users like us can be suspended or deleted by the social media network. If I own the website then I have peace of mind about that issue of sanction which means I can do whatever I want with my marketing activity because that is my own site.
If you want to get into the affiliate marketing. You have to start the blog. And then have to work with the blogs social media page. And then share the link from the blog to the social media page. Great question! And my answer is, since I will choose only one, I would choose to set up my own business website. The number 1 reason is, when you have your own business website, you are in total control. Some might say, "Why would I build my own website that will cost me when I can just create a page for my business on different social media platforms that are free". Social media really helps businesses to reach more potential customers. It is integrated with great marketing capabilities that allow business owners to have an online presence. But using social media platforms is like placing your business in a store that you don't personally own. You don't have the control when that store will open. If the owner doesn't want your business in their store anymore, they can take it down anytime without your permission. You can't prevent them from making changes that could impact your business and your revenue.
Building your own business website requires cost especially if you are not capable of doing it by yourself. You have to pay a recurring amount for your domain and web hosting. Great website design also cost high. And to be able to gain traffic, you have to optimize your website. It will not cost you anything if you know SEO. You absolutely need a business website. I do think though that the value of a business website has decreased significantly since the 90's or even early 2000's. I think people who run a 'hobby' site can survive strictly operating off of social media. But people who run a business or brand website must have both social and home page. Also when it comes to advertising, a business website gives you so much more freedom when it comes to advertising, sponsors, etc. You can advertise through your social media page also, but drawing website traffic is a lot easier than gaining Facebook likes or twitter followers.

Then they also have to keep the social media side and aspect of things fresh. It's a lot of hard work. The lull could also be because they are currently hiring for a social media manager. Things won't pick up on that side of things until they find one.

True. But there are a lot of people good at web design or website administration, operation or oversight who suck at social media. There's also the age issue. If an older guy in his 50's opens a new website, but isn't social media savvy... what's he supposed to do? It's actually funny you mention that because I work part time as a freelancer doing social media for an organization. The head of their media department didn't know what a hashtag was...he's probably in his late 40's, and is incredibly out of touch when it comes to the modern world of social media. A social media page for me is pretty better for me to setup and that is the only way that I am going to be able to truly save up some funds that I would have spent setting up a website. Also, you can easily reach out to a whole lot of friends when you setup a social media page as well.

When someone wants to buy something, they won't be looking for that product or service on any social media site. They'll probably head straight to a store they know or use a search engine to find them the best place where they can buy what they are looking for.

I've had to learn to be a lot more cautious with social media myself. I grew up when social media was just becoming a big thing, and a lot of us thought nothing of putting ALL our details on there. Now I think "gosh...that's a recipe for identity theft". I think it's important to exercise caution with social media and with putting details online...it can be an invasion of privacy, for sure!

That being said, if I really had to choose one, I’d probably end up going for the social media page. The truth is that you can do a lot with social media these days, and it’s way easier to garner attention there. If you just have a random website floating out in the ether that is the internet, odds are that it’s not going to get as much attention since your content isn’t as shareable as it would be on social media.
The shareability (I think I'm making up words here!) is such a key thing. You only have to see the attention certain things get on social media - the whole "going viral" thing is real. A business can go from nothing to something very quickly if they get the right kind of social media attention.
A business website is only going to be accessed if people know the website address. It simply doesn't have the same reach, IMO.

Sure, they might find you through Google and good SEO, but that traffic would be miniscule. The old school way of advertising your business would involve billboards, ads, fliers, and other forms of advertisement. All of that isn’t necessary with the advent of social media.

I have big plans for affiliate marketing and even if I don’t have much time to spare for that project, I am willing to use my leisure hours for that purpose. However the advice that I got is that it is best if I would have my own website that I can use to promote the products for my affiliates. I haven't use a business website. Every time I have to advertise something I've done it with social media because it is a lot more easier. And besides your friends or your followers will be your prospect clients. Promoting directly to social media can also be an advantage.

It really just depends on the scenario. The disadvantage of social media accounts is the lack of control. If you or the platform is caught up in a scandal, you may have issues. With that in mind, I think social media accounts are fine for small towns and hole in the wall businesses, but if you're in the city or run a bigger establishment, a website should be your first priority.
