The ups and downs of those "Pay For Your Rankings" type SEO companies

When it comes to increasing one's rankings within the search engines, everyone knows that they need backlinks. Paying for your rankings is a new way SEO companies can charge you for the work they've been doing. Basically, you will hire them and pay at a later date, if at all when they get your website to the top of the rankings. Now, there is a slight catch when it comes to this, and it's not said up front when you do sign up for a service like this. An SEO company selling a service like this can give you a pricing table that charges you different amounts depending on where you fall in the rankings after 30 days. These companies know that they will likely get you to page 3 within a month, so they will always be getting paid by you if you don't stiff them for some reason. Getting to page 2 and 3 for a low competition keyword is easier than you would think, you can literally build a few backlinks that are of decent quality and the website will begin to jump up in the rankings. Fast forward a month and the client has to pay the service provider for page 3 or higher rankings.Don't get me wrong, there are a lot of amazing SEO companies out there that do a service like this. There are also a bunch out there that won't alter their pricing structure for low competition keywords that are extremely easy to rank for. If you want to hire a company that does something like this, you'll need to know the ups and downs of a service like this, and they are:

THE UPS

You can get to page 2 or 3 and not have to pay anything (sometimes)
Some of these "Pay for Rankings" SEO companies will only charge you for page 1 rankings. This means that if you land on page 2, 3, 4, or higher you won't have to pay for anything! This is a great thing because you basically just got a full month of SEO for free since they didn't live up to what the agreement was. They said you only pay for page 1 rankings, but you land on page 2 or 3 and don't pay a penny. Of course, you'll need to patch a loophole with this, and that loophole is you need to specify what geographic location of a search engine you're targeting. If you're targeting Google.com and you get ranked in Google.in, you won't be getting the traffic you need. If you don't go over this small loophole, they SEO company can come back and show you page 1 rankings, on Google, in a country that you aren't targeting which would result in you having to pay for page 1 rankings.

Some of these companies charge based on the search volume
This is a good thing when you have a low competition niche because these tend to have less traffic to the keywords you're trying to target. Having less competition and less traffic means it's likely easier to get ranked in a short amount of time. Good SEO companies that charge for rankings will alter their pricing based on how much traffic you could get when hitting #1 for your keywords. They know it's easier to rank for your keywords, so they will lower the price in order to get you on board. Some companies will charge you an astronomical amount for easy keywords because they know that you aren't sure how to get top rankings. They will charge you much more because they know you will pay it.

THE DOWNS

Their pricing tends to be much higher
When you hire an SEO company who tries to get you top rankings across the board, for a single price, you will know exactly how much you'll be paying each month. The downside of these "Pay to Rank" services is that you will be targeting a single keyword and paying twice as much if you do end up ranking for it, compared to a normal SEO service structure.Their pricing is higher because they know how much money you could be making from a single keyword, and that's whey they only target the one keyword. If you end up getting ranked for a difficult keyword, you can easily make an extra $100, $500 or even $1,000 a day.

They may use spammy methods to boost you quickly
A lot of these companies will use spammy methods in order to get a quick boost in the search engines. It works for a short amount of time, but once Google notices everything that is going on, you'll drop off the first page and it will be much more difficult to get there.Companies that do this are just in it for the money and quick turn over. They will get you top rankings, but they will also be hurting your website at the same time. You will have to pay them since you hit the first page, even if it's only for a week.

They target obscure keywords so they can get paid
If you are giving some of these companies creative and targeting freedom, they can rank you for whatever they want and get paid for it. The keywords they target won't matter, as long as they are related to your niche and have "potential". Let's say you're in the "Exotic Cars" niche and hire a low-quality pay for rankings company, they could target "Exotic cars from Germany in 1900 with v10 engines" now there's no such thing as one of these, so not many people will be trying to rank for it. The keyword is very long tail as well, meaning it would be much easier to rank for as well. Pairing up the length of the keyword as well as there is no competition means you will rank on page 1 at the very top and have to pay the service provider a premium because you have top rankings. It doesn't matter that the keyword never gets any searches, you're now ranked #1 for a keyword related to your website and you have to pay for it.

In Conclusion
There are plenty of amazing companies out there that do a "Pay for Rankings" service, so if you want to go this route you will definitely need to do your due diligence before you sign any sort of contract. Paying for rankings is good and bad at the same time. If you're struggling to rank for a difficult keyword, you can usually bring in a pay to rank service and have them target a single keyword in hopes of topping the search engines.

Just as with a paid traffic company you are probably not going to get the kind of service you need with these paid SEO companies. They just might not give you the type of service you are looking for. I guess they provide a service, but it might not be the best.

The cons all seem to outweigh the pros, specifically when it comes to spammy methods to rank quickly. No matter how effective blackhat techniques are in the moment, the long-term consequences are not with it... at least, in my humble opinion.

When I first read of blackhat methods of SEO work, what came to my mind was the cheating in school. It’s not the ordinary cheating but about a college class that was able to get a leakage of the exams that everyone in the class got a perfect score. That is plain and obvious that cheating was done. I agree that the long term effect of blackhat methods will definitely harm the site.

I'd do a lot of research as far as reviews are concerned. Note, a legit company with good reviews wouldn't be trying these shady methods - because, well, obviously, it would lead to bad reviews. However, though, be careful because a website might get fake reviews. Therefore, look into the credibility of the review site.

Some of these companies use great methods to get you traffic. They're successful in making your traffic numbers spike. The problem arises when the traffic they've procured for you via search engine ranking is coming from people who may not be interested in your niche. Even through obscure keywords - some of those visitors may be curious about your site but not intrigued enough to click ads, visit and purchase from sponsors or join your forum community. That's where the spam methods hurt you. Your link is appearing in online spaces where the audience has little to no use for your subject matter or content.

I do my own SEO and I believe sometimes it is good not to think too much about the rank. If you are using keywords/keyphrase that gets high search hits but does not have good contents with the exact match, then you are likely to appear in the top search result. You don't need ranking company. If you are generating backlinks from edu and gov site, your domain will have high authority, your website will have top rank in search engine. Therefore, the main point about getting better rank is your content and the backlinks.

Yes, if you are getting results and are satisified with them you probably don't need an SEO company, and not everyone chooses to use them for a reason. It is just some of the things that have been mentioned on here already.

I have managed to take some of my website on the first and second page of the search engines and I am happy with my effort because I did not spend a single penny. I could have reached #1 by paying X amount however, the ranking is not stable, soon another website will replace the you from the top and you will have to again pay to get there.

"If you don't go over this small loophole, they SEO company can come back and show you page 1 rankings, on Google, in a country that you aren't targeting which would result in you having to pay for page 1 rankings."

Now this is an incredibly helpful tip. I don't think that all too many people would consider this sort of possibility That would be incredibly backhanded of the company to try and pull something like that without making your aware of it first.

Your point about spammy tactics is really important to keep in mind as well. If I'm paying for something, it means that we're doing business on a professional level, and I would expect professional performance from them as opposed to just spamming. I'd rather something take more time than taking the quick way and earning a bad name for my site.

Yes, while I think this still is a valuable service, many people should not rely on it solely to carry them through in the long term. Most of the time, these types of strategies are only meant to get your foot in the door but unfortunately most people think this is enough and should last them for the rest of the life of their business. More people really should gain more of an understanding of these tactics before they buy so they will have a plan beyond just the initial spike.

This is something that I was thinking as well for. When you take a closer look at how things work, you end to see that it is not cool to use shady tactics to get the site ranked since everything will be crashing down in no distance time as well.

It's true that these 'Pay for your rankings' SEO type of companies do have certain ups and downs as mentioned in this thread. What I personally observe about this is that these companies realize that newbies keep flooding the internet daily to look for money making opportunities one way or the other and try to extort money from them based on their respective levels of ignorance and weakness about SEO.

For experienced online entrepreneurs who learned all that needed to be learnt, they understand that getting ranked in google and other search engines never require spending at all times on SEO, but focusing and working powerfully on building your target audience.

I guess this discussion about hiring an SEO company is reserved for big websites that earn so much. With a personal website that is just small, I don’t think it has the capability to hire because of the budget constraints. And the best thing that you can do about that small website is to do the SEO methods yourself. Post good contents, original and interesting so Google can rank you better. Promote in social media your blog or website to get more traffic.

@ corzhens I disagree, even for small websites you can hire SEO companies for a very small fee, that's why this commentary is trying to explain that cheap is expensive. I think that many of us clients want to rank immediately and they are people willing to do that, but at what cost? I agree that we all should be careful. Thats why I think that even if you don't do your own SEO you should learn more about it, so that you can describe your parameters. At a minimum before you outsource your SEO choose your own keywords that you must absolutely rank for.

Ensure that you are doing your research well before paying any company to carry out a seo duty for you. From what I have noticed, whenever the client is disturbing that they have not seen any big changes on their site, the SEO person will use some not good to try and make your site rank higher.
