Why Freelancing is like building a house.

Today Freelancers, I'll share something special with you. The reasons I believe freelancing is like building a house. Yes! A real house.

First of all, you'll need to scout for good and proper areas and locations to build on. And once you find it, you'll build the construction foundation.

The construction foundation must be of extremely good and high quality, as it needs to be able to withstand a lot of pressure. (Walls, roof, floor and everything inside the house.)

When the construction foundation is in place, you'll now be able to put up walls. Like anything building related, this also requires a lot of effort.

When you finally managed to build all the walls, you'll be able to build the roof and all the inner walls.

And how does this relates to Freelancing business?

Honestly speaking, I shouldn't have to mention this. You should be able to see the similarity.

A freelancing business might take years to mold into something unique, something beneficial and something you'll be satisfied and proud of. - But it's usually worth it.

You need to establish good relations, both with clients and/or partners or co-workers. You need to reach out to others for help and you need recommendations and reviews as mouth to mouth is the best way of generating more sales. and more importantly, be honest and make sure you're trustworthy.

That being said, start building your own home today!

I tell my clients all the time that SEO is also like building a house. I'll tell them that it isn't an over night type of thing and will take time to do it right. The final results are better if the work is not rushed Why Freelancing is like building a house.

I've had plenty of clients over the years and each one of them who signs up for my bigger packages signs something saying they understand what they're buying and how long it could take to see good results. Almost every single time I'll get an email or phone call a month or two into the SEO campaign and they are complaining about not having more sales and their ROI isn't positive. I always use the "building a house" explanation and it takes time. I'll tell them that we have to get a good amount of base links (the foundation) and then we can build onto those (the walls).

One of my past clients was paying me around $1,500 a month and was on a 1 year contract. He started complaining after about 2 weeks and I gave him the "building a house" explanation. It seemed like he understood what was going on after that and he didn't contact me for another 2 weeks. After the second phone call he told me that he's breaking the contract because I wasn't providing any type of results, but I was because I had been tracking every single keyword I could think of that was related to his website lol. He got a lawyer, I got a lawyer, and in the end he had to pay for 6 months up front in order for me to break the contract lmao Why Freelancing is like building a house. So instead of just going with the flow and letting me do my work to eventually get him ranked for extremely difficult keywords, he had to pay me a for a total of 6 months up front to not get any of the work lmao Why Freelancing is like building a house.

Things take time, if you rush the work, it will usually turn out bad. This goes for SEO and pretty much anything that goes along with being a freelancer. Do the best work you possibly can and your dedication will pay off in the end because you'll be building a constant stream of return clients and they will even refer you to their friends and colleagues Why Freelancing is like building a house.

Not many people understand how much they will have to spend on repairs, and therefore if you have a small budget, but want to do everything inexpensively and efficiently, then you will also need suitable building materials. For example, you can buy plywood sheets at a low price, they will definitely come in handy in repairs. When I need building materials, I always order all building materials from this store.

This is a very interesting article and I totally agree with you. It is important to start with the foundations of a business and it is like building a house. If you have a good foundation, you will be able to withstand the problems that occur in the future. However, you can always buy an existing house (business) and you will be able to get a house that already has its foundations built and has has already been through a lot of come to come to this stage. Buying a good business is like buying a good house and it requires a lot of research into what the company has done and what is its reputation within the market.

Very good way to view it. I agree that it is indeed quite like building a house. In my case the foundation was largely dependent on the skills. Withou good writing skills and a willpower to work hard and deliver good services i could not have been able to build my freelancing business. It certainly takes time, and a lot of effort, just as workers who do construction work need to spend time and energy to manage to do a good job. It is also important to maintain the house as it will need repairs. In freelancing you need to make changes and adapt.

Andre I could not agree with you more, and really this applies to any business that you might want to start out.

I remember my husband asking me, last year about 5 months after I started my second and third websites, how much income those two websites had brought in and my answer was oh about $7.50. He gave me a funny look and asked me how much money I had put into them by then... and I listed off a few things which clearly saw me in the red. Then he asked me why I was working so hard.

The answer is a foundation. I am building the foundation of my business and while I am doing that I can't exactly make money from it can I?

Anyway now he is starting to see what I have spent all my energy doing for the last year and a half. Oh and when I closed my online store in February (my main source of income) to change it to a blog on a leap of faith... his eyes nearly popped out of his head LOL.

I know what I want and I know the quality of my work. I am not interested in what I am earning today so much as how profitable and stable my business is long term. I have big time goals... and making a shaky foundation is not on my agenda.

I love this illustration that you used Hitmeasap. You can apply this to almost anything in your life which is why i love it. It takes time to build anything especially a freelance business. I always think of the saying "Rome wasn't built in a day". So many people think its easy to start a business or to take on a bunch of clients at once, and the reality is that it is not. I agree with everything you said and i think that its important for people to make sure they start with the most important part of the house before they move on. Some people like to start with the roof and getting clients but they have no place to send these customers. Its very important that this is done in sequence and not in a chaotic order.

Great analogy, Andre. I totally agree with you.

Some people like to cut corners, and do things the easy way and then their roof caves in on them and they have no idea why. To build a "concrete" foundation you must not cut corners, and do things right. I often see people cutting corners, and failing at whatever it is they are doing. Their roof caves in on them, and they have a really hard time digging themselves out.

Once your "home" is all built, you can move in. However, don't build too fast, otherwise your walls will cave in, the roof will collapse and you'll be homeless. :/

Wow, thank you guys for all the awesome replies. I won't respond to all of you so I do this instead.
Mike, you have a good point about "building a house and making it into a home". - This is very true. Anyone CAN build a house and even if they can turn it into a good home, some people should NOT build their own house. Not now, not tomorrow and not next week either. Perhaps never. And why? - Because of the things some of you've already pointed out. It's easy to rush into things, and when you do that, you'll ultimately take risks, and some of those risks aren't worth to take.

Wouldn't be to awesome if your roof caved in like Everett mentioned right? - You're sitting there watching some TV or doing whatever you want too and BAM! suddenly you've got the roof in your lap. Wouldn't be that nice.. And the thing is, that some people truly rush their way into anything they find online. In a desperate way to make money. Take your time, like your girlfriend or boyfriend would want you to do. It's okay with a 4 seconds thing here and there but not on a regular basis. And definitely NOT when you're building your house.

Good analogy Andre! But Dude, I have to tell you this, I've built a house and freelance is nothing like it! Trust me, I would choose 100 years of freelancing than to build a house again in my lifetime.
A house might be a pain in the ass, but once it's completed you can just "expand" it as you sick fit, you can always expand you freelance skills and build over the old skills, but you will never build over a newly constructed house.

A house once finished is pretty static, you only need to do maintenance work on it, freelance skills are fluid and always changing.

Even though I understand what you mean, and I can totally see your point, I actually still think it's quite similar to building a house. In fact, you'll never build over a new house but you'll renovate it for sure. Sooner or later. And that's the thing. If you grow your business and make it a solid business, you'll just need to maintain it, just like you would do with a house. - And if you ever need to come up with new and fresh ideas for your business, well, that would be to renovate your house.. At least in my opinion Why Freelancing is like building a house.

Anyhow, thanks for the reply. I see your point and it's definitely a good one!

yeah, freelancing business could be like building a house in the sense that it is going to take someone a number of years to cut out an imposing figure as freelancers in the market, but one thing that is assured is that once the freelancer is known in the market. Then, it is going to be easier for him to make it big in the market.

For me, freelancing is a long term process. When you build a house, it doesn't stop after the construction. There is maintenance to do in keeping the house a nice place called home. The time that you invest will reap rewards in the future. That's why easy money is not a good way of earning because it doesn't last long.

I don't think that this is something similar. Building works are usually difficult so better will be to find good contractor. Everyone has to do their job!

I completely agree! Construction and repair is really difficult. Especially if you don't have any experience in this field. I work in IT sphere and recently I made kitchen renovation. I decided to hire professional builders and choose design project from best kitchens. Result is really great!

I recently found an article that tells about roofs, what is their cost, what materials are available for replacement and how long it will take, you can learn about all these things from this article https://www.roofadvisor.co.uk/ roof-insulation-cost/. The article is extremely useful, not only for people who want to repair or replace the roof, but also for people who have not yet encountered this
