Do you need on-going SEO or would a one-time fix solve the problem?

SEO Experts,
Cristian created a superb topic previously about the "Most important SEO Pre-Launch tips and tricks", and I appreciate all the answers and that topic a lot.

However, I've always wonder about SEO services and how often you need them..

Imagine this scenario. I create a website, I do everything suggested in Cristians previous topic and I hire someone to do the ranking and whatever they need to do so I'm ranking high on google etc.

Would I need to have someone to do seo for me regularly or would a I be okay with more of a "one-time" fix? - I do understand that my competitors might rank higher than me on certain keywords with time, but do I benefit from doing seo on-going or to do it one time and wait until my competitors are ranking higher than me again, before I hire someone again?

Definitely don't wait around for you competitors to catch up with you and as far as SEO goes, there is no such thing as a one-time fix in my opinion. SEO very long term process, you need to constantly update and creating new campaigns for getting backlinks and to stay on top of things.

Even if you are currently ranking good for certain keywords, what's stopping you from targeting other keywords and gain even more organic traffic? This is often an issue I have with most of my clients, few of them understand that SEO is not a simple fix that you implement and take your mind off it.

Thank you Cristian, I appreciate your answer!
Even though I can understand why SEO would be an important thing to have on-going, especially to rank new keywords as you said, I still wonder about having on-going SEO for a long period of time. - Let's say I've used someone to do SEO for my for a month or whatever and I'm ranking high using the keywords I want to target. Would it still be beneficial to continue with the SEO service/services or would I in reality be able to pause it and continue at a later point in the future?

My personal opinion Cristian is that it depends on each website and each niche. I have 3 website in different niches and one of them I have hardly worked on at all yet is it ranking the highest and it appears to just be going from strength to strength. That is my addiction blog. Google loves it, people love it and it is just kinda going on its own steam.

Then I have an online marketing blog that is doing quite nicely but my traffic seems to be kinda stuck where it is right now. I have really done a good job with my on page seo and I also do some of my own off page seo, mostly social media marketing and a little bit of backlinking. I have purchased some SEO services for this website and it really does help. This niche is quite competitive though!

Then I have my mommy blog which is not doing so good with rankings right now. I get most of my traffic from social networks but since I changed my website from being an online store to just a blog my rankings took a huge knock and I am trying to build that up again.

For a competitive niche I would say that hiring someone to do SEO on a constant basis is a must. The most important thing in my opinion is to keep the content coming, keeping it fresh and fun. Get your on page SEO done well and then start hiring someone to juice that up with off page SEO.

I always monitor quite closely the work that is done for me and I can see how much of a difference it makes. Sorry I couldn't be more specific with my answer, but I do think there are a lot of variables!

My take on SEO work is that it is a chore which you have to do regularly. Take for instance the content that you upload to your site, you cannot stop creating content because your site will be considered stagnant and the ranking will surely go down. Building backlinks is also a regular thing even if you do it just once or twice a week. What’s important for SEO work is the regularity.
