Social Bookmarks. SEO or not?

Dear SEO experts.
I have slim to none experience in SEO and I'm curious to know if Social Bookmarks are considered to be SEO or if this is something SEO experts usually provide as it "relates" somehow to their SEO business?

I've heard many different things and I've seen hundreds of different discussions regarding this but I've never actually got a decent answer for it. Most people claims it to be something SEO experts provides "as a bonus" of sorts, within their SEO services and others seems to be ?convinced that Social Bookmarks has nothing at all to do with SEO.

Best Regards,

Well social bookmarking sites are high authority sites. Most of them anyway. Sites like Reddit, StumbleUpon, Delicious etc etc. So you do get some value from having links from them. Even though they are all mostly no-follow. However there are many low value social bookmarking sites as well like those Pligg sites that don't really have much authority, although some of them are quite big now for the ones that have been around a long time. Some of them provide a do-follow link as well. So you do get some benefit from them by way of the little link juice they give you. But it's only really the big social bookmarking sites that count as those are where there are a lot of people using them so you have a better chance of people actually seeing your links.

Here's a list of social bookmarking sites I have bookmarked and use the most.

I'll put them here as you might find one or two useful to you, you might like to use.

pinterest.com/
twitter.com/
stumbleupon.com/
del.icio.us/
vk.com/

myspace.com/

evernote.com/
lifestream.aol.com/

newsvine.com/
posteezy.com/
lockerdome.com/
mettablog.com
youmob.com/
savenkeep.com/
fav20.com/
99submit.com/
fansgrow.com/
bookmarker.work/
exchangle.com/
thecherryshare.com
newsmeback.com/
sitejot.com/

These are all mostly high authority social bookmarking sites and getting a link from them can't hurt. They are a mix of no and do follow and some of more users on them than others. You can create profiles on these sites as well like I've shown with one of them the PearlTrees one, and bookmark all your services on here and stuff which you can then promote like anything else and drive traffic to them the same as any thing else. So they do have several benefits from an SEO perspective and for that extra promotion they can give you.

And there is some direct correlation for social bookmarking sites having a positive ranking effect on your rankings. When I launch a new website or blog or e-commerce site or something, I usually always manually bookmark it first when doing SEO on it. Or just buy a few manual social bookmarking services on here and do that lots over time and it can have a great positive effect on rankings.

The thing is with social bookmarking sites is they are usually moderated (the top ones) and that's why Google likes them. Google likes any site where there are people who moderate posts. That's why they like Wiki sites and social networking sites. Where the more people there are using those sites, the more authority they have in the eyes of Google.

Wow Mike, just wow. That was a truly outstanding reply. However, even though you've given me such an incredible in-depth reply, would you mind just shortly say if Social Bookmarks ARE in fact SEO, in your opinion?

Perhaps you've already stated this in some superb way but I'm nothing more than a layman so I'm looking for the shortest answer possible for this kind of. Social Bookmarks. SEO or not?

That being said, I'm thankful for all the bookmarking sites. I'll save these for later!

Well using social bookmarking sites to increase traffic and ranking to your sites is SEO yes. But social bookmarks aren't SEO themselves no. Social bookmarking sites are just social bookmarking sites. But SEO is made up of many different things and there are many different things you can do to "SEO" your site. It's just one of the things you can do that can give you a bit of a boost to your SERP rankings.

No problem! Sharing is caring! Social Bookmarks. SEO or not?

Exactly bro, .i concure with you on that. social bookmarking are just part of SEO as they can help in getting you real traffic visitors as well as increasing your SERP rankings in search engine results. Though to me, it may not really be that extremely effective as before but they are still much ok.
but in some of them, one has to be active in it and contribute to the site in terms of comments, adding fresh posts etc so that you can appear relevant to other users too. sites like reddit, stumbleupon, twitter, tumblr etc. just like in the IM forums. it shouldnt just be about posting your links and forgetting about it.

Thank you Mike, I appreciate it! - So if an "expert" would offer to do "SEO" for me, and he do Social Bookmarking, then that would be totally fine and "in the lines" of his work basically? - Even though this might not be what most of them are doing?

Yes Andre, it is a part of linkbuilding as I understand it and it is important to have diversity when it comes to links. So you need some blog comments, some social bookmarks, some guest posts, some directory links etc... and some do follow and some no follow too.

Wow Mike, thanks for sharing all these social bookmarking sites, this is a great list. I am sure these were all included in that list that I got from you a while back.

Can you maybe just explain to me what exactly is meant by creating a social bookmark? Does that refer to when you create a profile with your website or business name and create a link back to your website?

Sorry, this is probably a bit of a stupid question but I have never quite understood how to create my own social bookmarks or what is meant by social bookmarking.

No problem Lynne welcome yes I think so!

And yes well, social bookmarking sites were created to be online bookmarks. A place you could save and store your favorite sites and things online to instead of using your own browsers bookmarks. However over time they become great sites with a lot of people using them so you get that benefit of a lot of people seeing your links. Plus they have become high authority sites so they can provide some SEO benefit as well.

It's simple really, you go to the site, register, then click submit, fill in your details, link, title, description and tags and click submit. Bang! You just saved a link to a social bookmarking site. Social Bookmarks. SEO or not?

Oh wow, ok that makes complete sense then. Do I use my real name or my business name for my profile? Can I create just one profile on each social bookmarking website and then add all of my links to that profile or do I need a new profile for each website?

This is the problem I had with your list of links, I am a newbie at link building so I although I have made a start on it I don't actually know how to go about building links for each type of website.

You should write an ebook to go with that service as an extra... like a how to linkbuilding guide for dummies or something! I'd buy that!

Yeah well, I don't really suggest putting your real name and address anywhere online unless you're using it as a business address or something but then you probably should be using another address or a PO box address or something. You wont need to put your address anyway really. You can fill in your profile on most of them but just put some dummy data or something if you can. And you don't need to create different accounts although some people do. But just one profile should be enough for now. But you wouldn't want to submit all your own sites likes all at once as well as that's seen as "self promotion". Although you can on some sites and that was what social bookmarking sites were made for but they're seen as more for submitting interesting links and sites and things you found and want to share with them rather than just posting all your own sites likes and products and services all the time. Which you can do but just mix it up a bit and try to engage a little with other peoples posts even if it's just giving them a thumbs up or something otherwise in time it will look like you're a post-and-go type of user. But I've been a post-and-go user for years and submit mostly my own links and my clients too and still have accounts on those sites.

Yeah that' the thing with that list you have. While it's a great list that can really pack a punch! To really put it to use you might need to know how to use each of the platforms and sites within them. I will be providing an updated list of that in the new year with updated sites although not much changes as most are old and long lasting sites anyway. But in that version what I'll do is do a write up on how to use each of the platforms and sites within each list type along with the benefits of each. Which should help you guys that haven't used them before or don't even know why you should! Social Bookmarks. SEO or not?

Social Bookmarks backlinks can still help increasing your authority even though it doesn't hold the weight it once did. In any case, if you are creative enough and you do it right your website can benefit a lot from Social Bookmarks.

Take Reddit for example, a huge source of traffic potential, if you do it right and have a good niche you can go even viral! Just be careful when promoting yourself on communities like Reddit, because there is a chance of all of this to backfire, I think I'll make a post about Reddit next week, stay tune.

I think the most potent bookmarking site is Reddit not because of my experience but I have been seeing so many discussions about Reddit in forums. So many of my freelancer friends are into Reddit and they say that it is one good site especially if you know the tricks to gain traction. But for the purpose of SEO methods I guess you can use some other bookmarking sites that are listed above in the comment of @idealmike.
