If you ask anyone if you can post to blogs to increase your rankings they won't really be able to give you a good answer since a lot of times people just post crap in the comments sections. But blog posts do work well if done right, and I'm not talking about posting "Great Article (insert link here)" types of posts lol.
GUEST POSTS!!!!
Guest posts are where you get authorization from the blogger, admin or website owner and you can post what you want as long as it's detailed and niche related. Your post will definitely go into moderation if you're a newer guest blogger, but after some time and posts you should start seeing your articles get auto approved, which is a really awesome feeling 
Doing guest posts will help with your rankings, traffic and sales because you can drop your link in the authors section of your profile and it shows up on all of your posts that get authorized. You'll post high quality content and get rewarded with links back to your website, and we all know what backlinks are
I found a nice resource for gust blogging, it's a website called guestposttracker.com and they update their lists regularly. There are various niches to post to, not all will work for you, but you can still get some links back from them if you post niche relevant content
The really awesome thing about this is that guestposttracker is a one time fee of $37 at the time of posting this. The original price is $79 but even that is still reasonable since it's a one time fee and not monthly Basically you can pay $37 to find, post, and track all the blogs and websites that accept guest posts. You can filter out blogs that want to get paid for a guest post or if you want to filter out low quality blogs you can do that as well

I write all my own content as well, except for a few websites where I'm trying to build a community so I let people come in and post what they want. I do moderate the whole process so that each post doesn't get auto approved and garbage shows up on my pages

I think guest posting on blogs still works pretty well if done right. Use them as a first tier and then build links to them to increase the traffic flow and rankings. Eventually you will be flooding the first page of Google Yahoo! and Bing with your own posts when someone searches for your domain in the search engines. Think of this as more of a branding approach where you can get a positive message out about your website :D
Another good thing about these is that you can siphon some of the traffic from these websites with guest posts. If the website is niche specific then the traffic will most likely be interested in what you have to offer. But if you're posting on a dog website and you are an electronics company, you won't see as much of a benefit as if you were in the same niche lol :D

Yup, it's a one time fee to access their platform. It was $37 when I checked yesterday and could go as high as $79 when they don't want to discount it lol :D

Even though a lot of people and SEOs say guest posting is not that effective anymore I think it's still one of the main ways to get backlinks and improve ranks, otherwise what else are we left with when it comes to building backlinks? I prefer hiring someone to search and pitch for guest posts, meanwhile I usually write the content myself or hire someone to do it for me. I have a whole process for finding niched related blogs with good authority that are still active, which I can instruct anyone.
