I am confused! Content or Backlinks? Which is superior NOW?

I am seriously at a crossroad here! Just of recent, i have seen web articles, internet forums, blogs etc talk about content now the MAIN FACTOR for getting higher search engine rankings as these present times is concerned. I have also seen some argue that getting backlinks is still the ULTIMATE.
I know that CONTENT and BACKLINKS are necessary for higher rankings but which one will you go for if you were to choose only one.
Please i want t hear from the seoclerks house; which one is now the SUPERIOR as at these present times?

I am a blogger and I can tell you that I have not spent much time getting backlinks, yes I do order some packages here and yes I do work on building my own backlinks from time to time but my main focus is on content.

The big thing to remember here is that without quality content your backlinks won't do anything for you anyway! Content comes first and if your content is great then adding backlinks will back that up 100%. If you create rubbish content and then add backlinks then it will do nothing for your website anyway.

If you create rubbish content and then add backlinks then it will do nothing for your website anyway. - fully agree with you. Content is what is most important, backlinks can come later to make that content stronger.

Thank you very much for your input into this topic, at least i am now getting clearer and clearer on which way out as regards this lingering issue of contents and backlinks. surely i will stick with you, though my research on it continues.

The most important thing is one's content without a good content, getting a backlink become very difficult.Content has always been king and that alone can keep the readers than backlinks.So write valuable, useful and interesting contents to be able to attract organic traffic.

Backlinks on their own are practically useless. If you are going to focus solely on backlinks you are not going to do anything as even though you might get people to click, they are not going to stick to your site or blog if there is no relevant and valuable content there. Content is king - you have probably heard this. And I would say it is a supreme emperor, conqueror and almighty when it comes to being successful. Backlinks can be used, but I strongly suggest you focus first and foremost on your content, and on making sure it is always fresh, original and up to date.

PS I have published some posts that landed up #1 on Google a few minutes after publishing it and when this happens and any other page 1 and 2 rankings I quickly come here and buy a service to back it up and cement my rankings.

hmmmm,.. that is a very smooth strategy to maintain your position on google rankings but what kind of service do you buy,.....is it backlinks or content services?. though my mind is saying backlinks but just want to be very sure?

Content mate, focus on the content and you'll get backlinks if you are good enough. Even if you plan to make a backlink campaign you still need to have good content. Otherwise what are you going to do with all that gained authority if Google won't rank you for nothing because you have low quality content?

Content will always remain the front-runner. If you do not have contents, no one will come to your website. If you do not have contents, there is a limitation on using meta tags and meta descriptions. You, of course, need backlinks, but first you need to build contents on your website. When you have enough contents that have 3-4 focus keywords, only then you can start backlinking.

From a logical point of view I would say concentrating on posting backlinks with a site that has poor content has no sense at all, even if you achieve rank and a good traffic flow to your site, what would that accomplish if you have scrappy content? Traffic would just come to your site, take a brief look and completely forget your site afterwards, if you're selling something or offering services or just blogging articleschances are they won't buy or they won't read it because people are looking for the content they need.

Having a continuous flow of good content posted in your site in a regular basis is the core of having a good effective and profitable site.

Based on the discussions that I have read in this site, content is king and I think it will remain as the top priority of search engines because without contents, there is no website to speak of. It’s like saying that what is the use of backlinks and keywords when your site is stagnant and has no fresh contents for a long time. If you have good contents that is fresh, the search engine can see your site and can give you consideration to be included in the search list. But even with thousands of backlinks but if you have not content to speak of then that is a disaster for SEO.
