Do social bookmarking still work for modern SEO?

Do social bookmarking still work for modern SEO?

I remember most SEO articles 5 years ago repeated the same thing over and over when
discussing about SEO link building methods, social bookmarking was on the list! Every time!

Even today, some bloggers and "SEO gurus" still mention social bookmarking as a valid link building method. But does is still work?

Do people still use websites like StumbleUpon or Digg? I personally use Inbound from time to time and I know a lot of people in the SEO niche get traffic from inbound.org so yeah, can still be a traffic source I guess.
If you still use social bookmarking as a valid link building strategy, what are your top five bookmarking websites?

Yes it can still work but only if done properly overtime. The thing is only really with the high authority bookmarking sites because they have a lot of authority so you don't want your site to miss out on any links from them. It's even speculated that Google uses them as a ranking factor. Looking at things like how many SU submissions, how many Reddit submissions, how many Digg submissions etc etc that you have. But only for the really good social bookmarking sites. But even the lower quality, smaller ones can help too. Some provide do follow submissions and are crawled frequently by Google and other SE's so that means your site will get crawled from it too.

Also as these are high authority social bookmarking sites, they have many users using them everyday so provided your submission is a good one it can sometimes go on to get hundreds of reshares, saves etc and go on to send you tons of traffic. I don't know if you've ever had an SU spike? Sometimes they can last for days and weeks even. And sometimes it can send up to 10k+ to your site per day. All real users of course that are stumbling the life out of that submission. So much so that it may put your current hosting plan to the test!

Topped with Reddit as well. Another high authority social bookmarking site that can send you hordes of traffic from your submissions. Plus text submissions are do follow as well and Reddit is constantly crawled by Google too and will visit/crawl your site from that.

Plus as high authority sites, they rank high in the SERPs for things. So your bookmarks which are public can be ranked high on their own. For this reason, social bookmarking sites are well worth taking full advantage of and submitting your sites posts, products etc to them.

But they can also be used for keyword targeting purposes as well. Since they let you choose which keywords to use as the title of them. For this reason, marketers and SEO's have used them for keyword targeting purposes for years.

My top 5 social bookmarking sites to use are

Stumble Upon
Reddit
Pinterest
Tumblr
Twitter

Lately I've been experimenting with pocket.com

Some others I like to use are Scoop.it, Instapaper, Plurk, VK & Pearltrees.

I will be honest here, I don't know the answer. It appears to me that a lot of emphasis was placed on the important of social bookmarking in the past and I would think now that this method doesn't carry as much as weight as before.

This is just an assumption though.

I use Digg by the way, it is part of my checklist for after publishing new content. I share my link there just after publishing new content. I don't know if this has a big effect but my content usually ranks well and that is on my list of things to do, so I certainly wouldn't cross that off my list.

Well after the Google Penguin update "spamming" bookmark websites with links has become a bad practice link building technique from Google's perspective, because it's not natural and the actual owner can do its own "promotion" and because you can do a lot of them which equals low quality.

So yeah, as far as I know, after the Pinguin update, old Social bookmarking techniques don't work that well and if done excessively can even get you panelized.

I am not well versed with bookmarking although I had a thorough study on the subject from the discussions that I had read in this site. I guess bookmarking still has a beneficial effect on the site. It is just not as effective as before when the bookmark that you leave on a directory could give you results quick. Even the backlinks now have to wait for some time before you see the effect.
