Like Mike said, it all depends on what exactly you want.

For a lot of my websites I'll have to pay for a domain, hosting and a premium wordpress theme.
  • Domain: $0.99 to $20 depending on where you get it and if you purchase the privacy protection.
  • Hosting: $3 to $X,XXX.00 per month. I would suggest getting a small hosting account for a few dollars a month until you need to increase it. Make sure the hosting is quick, don't buy from a crappy service.
  • Premium Theme: $50 to $75. Most of the themes are pretty detailed and extensively coded. I've bought themes that have taken me weeks to configure to my specifications because they are so detailed. It's a good thing that it took that long, it makes my site look super fancy lol How much does it cost to build a website?

Now if you're going with an ecommerce type website I would recommend using Shopify.com

Here's the costs of shopify:
  • Domain: This will still cost $0.99 to $20.
  • Hosting: Included in your shopify plan that you sign up for. The best plan is $29 because you won't need the super advanced features of the higher priced plans right away.
  • Premium Theme: $130 to $180. These themes are much higher priced for some reason. I think it's because there aren't as many themes for their platform compared to Wordpress where you can browse thousands. You can use a free theme and customize if in a day, I do this a lot of times if I am just testing an ecommerce website How much does it cost to build a website? The free themes for shopify still look really good unlike the free themes for wordpress.

Different websites have different costs.

I'll provide a few examples below:

Social Network
You'll probably spend at least $25 to buy a domain and get a cheap hosting plan. You'll pay around $10 for the domain name, since it's about the average cost per domain especially for .COM extensions. You'll pay maybe $5 to $10 per month for hosting, the hosting plan wouldn't need to be that great, just enough bandwidth and diskspace to meet the needs of the social network. Now, the script would probably cost you at least $100 and up to $2,000. If you use a free and opensource script than it'll be free but I recommend that you create a custom social networking script because those free ones don't really get that big.

Micro Job Site
Same price for the domain and hosting as above. However, there is some scripts ranging from $99 and onwards. There is free versions of a micro job site but once again there are plenty of sites and most of them do not do that well. You'll most likely need a custom script coded which can cost up to $100 to $2,000. You may need to pay a little more a month for hosting especially if you're going to be hosting the images on the site and not use a free image hosting website. Images can take up a lot of bandwidth.

Gaming Site
Same price for the domain, and hosting as above. There are plently of cheap scripts to use, ranging from $20, to $2,000. Depending on the game, you may need to hire an artist to create the graphics, items, characters, and that could be really costly. If the game is text based you won't have that much of an issue as a graphic artist wouldn't be needed.

I am a blogger and I hardly pay anything. I am a member of Wealthy Affiliate so I can build my website and host it at no extra fees above my monthly membership fee. Then I would want my own domain so that costs about $10.

I do everything myself so there are no extra costs. Of course if you are looking at being a lot more professional and maybe having an online store for example then I am not sure what the costs would be.

It hugely depends on how much of an internet savvy person you are. If you already have skills like basic programming, wordpress, photoshop and things like that you would probably be capable of creating your own website with a little help and with a very small budget.

But if you want something really professional and we are talking about an online store, for example, the sky is the limit. I've collaborated with agencies that had contracted 20.000 Euros worth of online store development, just for one website re-design.

The local rates for Wordpress blogs is around 500 to 1000 dollars. Pretty expensive if you ask me, given the fact that pretty much anyone can install and run a Wordpress blog. But I guess clean code and unique design plus some additional functionalities do need to cost something.

Hi sanfora thanks for your question. I think you already got some exactly answer. How much could be coast for making a website. It is completely depend on purpose. If you want to make a word press site. You just need to buy domain and hosting first and I am sure you can get it within $10 and if you want to set up free theme. 410 good enough for creating a website. Or if you want to get premium them, It is depend on what kind of theme will you purchase and what purpose? If you want to buy for blog, you can buy it from $15 to $59 or more high.
So, it is completely depend on your purpose. And I think no need too much invest initially.

If you do it yourself, you can build a website under $20 (price for a domain and hosting).
Wordpress is a great content management system and you are free to use wordpress. There are numerous free themes and plugins that can help you customize your wordpress site. Interestingly, you can use wordpress even if you have zero knowledge on designing and programing. Your host might provide on click installation of wordpress on your domain. After you install the wordpress, choose a free theme based on your niche. Add plugins to give your website better look. Add categories and create menu, add contents. Your website is ready to go.

I agree with everyone you can get a website up and running for $20 a year. Having said that, that is usually a new customer bonus. it's going to cost a lot more than $20 to renew your website after 1 year. And keep in mind that although you can do well with $10 hosting, as your traffic increases your going to need a lot more than $10 a year hosting.

Thanks for the information that you guys shared in this discussion. This is a big help to those who have plans of having their own website. And although the figures are not accurate with the costing here because we are in a 3rd world country, it can still be a good basis for at least some of the figures in dollars like the web hosting and domain costs can be considered accurate.
