    When would you pay more for a domain?

    What if the domain you wanted was already taken by another site owner but contained your desired keywords you were targeting in Google Search? Would you approach the site owner with an offer and agree to pay more for that?

    If I knew the domain was up for sale and I was able to contact the person selling it, then yeah, I would contact him and discuss buying it and make an offer. I wouldn't contact a domain owner to buy their domain if it wasn't up for sale. If the owner got back to me and wanted to up the offer I made, then it would depend on how bad I wanted the domain, if it was an exact match for something I was doing like a business, project or something, even my name would be good, then I would definitely consider whatever price they said to me unless it was ridiculously over priced. When would you pay more for a domain?

    Back in the day, I used most 2.0 blog sites with exact match domain (except with subdomain) and had insanely good results in Google search. Though I didn't really bother buying EMD.

    There is some indication that Exact Match Domains are useless now. (though some webmasters disagree).

    If you have the money in your webmaster budget and you really want that keyword rich domain, then you should go for it. Otherwise, just select a brandable domain that your users will enjoy more and include at least one good keyword (such as webmaster or gaming or whatever your niche happens to be) and that should be sufficient to let Google know your site is themed to that niche.

    When I don't find a domain name of my choice, instead of paying more to acquire that domain, I will settle with another extension. For example, if I want a domain llightwave.com and it is already taken, I will choose different extensions like dot net, dot info, dot online etc. Since extension does not matter when it comes to SEO, I will choose to have a different extension rather than paying more. having said that if it is possible to tweak the domain name, I will always do that.
