Keyword density is important because search engines use this information to categorize a site's theme, and to find out which terms the site is relevant to. The exact keyword density will help achieve higher search engine positions. Keyword density needs to be balanced correctly.

WebPages are often filled with repetitive usage of keywords, this is called keyword stuffing. Repeating your keywords in an unnatural way is not good for your users and often results in a lower - not higher, ranking in Google.

Keyword density tells you how often a search term appears in a text in relation to the total number of words it contains. For example: if a keyword appears three times in a 100-word text the keyword density would be 3%. From the point of view of search engines, a high keyword density is a good indicator of search engine spam. If a keyword appears too often in a website, search engines will downgrade the website and it will then appear lower down in search results.

Keyword stuffing" refers to the practice of loading a webpage with keywords or numbers in an attempt to manipulate a site's ranking in Google search results. Often these keywords appear in a list or group, or out of context (not as natural prose). Filling pages with keywords or numbers results in a negative user experience, and can harm your site's ranking.

I have come across many discussions that say keyword stuffing is illegal and can hurt your site regarding search engine capability. Now I am wondering why search engines would penalize a web page that has 50% of the contents are just keywords. That example is absurd but the issue is the why of search engines. Will the crawlers spend time to count the keywords and tag it for penalty when the count exceeds the maximum density?
