You can use Pinterest or Facebook to promote an article for traffic. Pin photos from your article on social networking sites. If you are optimizing for search engines, you should include your main keyword in the title, description and body of article. Also by making your article longer, 1000 words or more, you are more likely to rank better. Google seems to like more indepth content as it indicates there is more knowledge or answers on the page for the reader.

Whether you want to promote your online article, blog or a website, social media is the best platform. You can share your article on facebook, twitter, google +, LinkedIn or Pinterest. You can get traffic and social signals from these social media sites. If you want to make most from your article, you need to have a high-quality article that is properly optimized with keywords and backlings.
Blog commenting and forum posting is also a good way to promote articles.

I am assuming that your article is published on your website. And to promote that article, you can make an introductory post to your timeline on Facebook, I am assuming that you have a Facebook account. If you have an account in Twitter, you can also tweet about your article and say something interesting about it. If you have more time, you can go to popular blogs with the same niche of your article. Post a comment on the blog that you will read and cite your article for having the same niche.
