Make forums not viewable to guests

Do you set it so that some subforums or posts are not viewable to guests?

Wouldn't this defeat the purpose of using Google adsense on your site, considering how Google doesn't permit you to use Adsense on sites that are members only pages? I think this would apply in this situation too.

If you have private subforums, you should make it so the title of the subforum is readable by Google and guests but when you click through the posts are invisible to anyone who is not signed in. This will provide a teaser and a good reason for guests to sign up to see what's going on in the subforum.

I agree that it is okay to hide some boards but not the entire forum to guests. One local forum about horse racing is so strict with the boards that when you go to the site, all you can see is the login page. It is as if everything is secret. It’s not good because guests also count as traffic and they are missing a lot of guest traffic. But hiding some boards is a different story. At least there will be a good enough reason for a lurker to register and be counted as member before he can see everything.
