The .mobi format is the format you need to optimally load your book to Amazon, whilst .epub format is the industry standard for all other ebook marketplaces. Yes, you can load non-Amazon optimized .epub files to Amazon, but from my own experience as a self published author, this often leads to formatting errors when books are presented on different kindle devices.
